Title: Bertrand Evelyn Luffman
Post by: Redroger on Wednesday 29 December 10 19:42 GMT (UK)
Was born Sitapur India in 1877, the son of James Austin Luffman and Elice (or Esther) Pansick. At some time between 1900 and the outbreak of WW1 he migrated to Australia as he was killed at Gallipoli in 1915 holding the rank of Sergeant in the 17th Battalion of the Australian Infantry. Could any information survive about his migration, and if so, where can I access it? Thanks.

Hi,

I can't help with his migration but are you aware that his entry on the CWGC site gives his parents as James Austen and Elizabeth Ann Luffman?   His wife shown as Elizabeth Bole Luffman of Sydney.   He is shown as a native of Sitapur, India;  I wonder if he sailed from India to Australia?

His grandfather James Luffman was born in Sherborne, which if my research is substantially correct means he was a fairly close relative of mine, very close in family history terms!I can confirm his place of birth both from his military history and from his baptismal record from the British Library. His father, James Austin Luffman and uncle John are believed to be the two boys whose names are shown on the Lucknow memorial, though I have not yet confirmed their identities.
If as seems likely he migrated from India to Australia then according to his army record downloaded from the National Archives of Australia, he went via South Africa.Again, having only downloaded this minutes ago I have not yet digested the 49 pages of his service history. When I have further information to post I will do so on this thread. Thanks.

Looks like he was married in NSW in 1915. His marriage certificate should confirm his parents

Thanks for that; looks as though she was either a widow or divorcee at time of marriage

Examination of his service history shows that he first enlisted on 11th August 1914 as a private with the Australian Naval and Military Expedition. He was promoted Sergeant 18th August 1914, and was discharged from the unit 18th January 1915, the certificate showing "having completed period of engagement". He subsequently re-enlisted with the AIF on 8th May 1915; during this apparent three month hiatus in service he had apparently married, as his next of kin had changed from his mother, at an address in Moradabad, India, to his wife at an address in Sydney Australia.
His 1914 attestation form shows military service with 1) South African Light Horse 11 months 2) Johannesberg Mounted rifles 7 months 3) Waldious scouts 31/2 months 4) Steinmachers? Special Squadron 7 months.
I assume service with these units would have taken place during the Boer Wars on the late 19th/ early 20th century, and would like to know more. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Hi,

Records WO 126 and WO127 at The National Archives should hold some information.

PM to follow.

Many thanks Stegi. This has however cleared up one mystery, i.e. where he qualifed as an accountant? Obviously it was before he had service in the Boer War. I have his Australian Army record which 15 years or so later shows his NOK as his mother, and then his wife, both resident in Sydney.
