Title: CheshireView Pendleton
Post by: gilesc on Tuesday 04 January 11 20:44 GMT (UK)
A happy new year to you all, I'm sure you will be as helpful in 2011 as you were in 2010.
Has anyone heard of a place/house/street named Cheshire View in Pendleton?
My family were living there in 1839. The father was named James Gibbon/s/ins and he was a brewer. The mother's name was Harriet and the child's name was also Harriet who was baptised  Harriet Gibbon   15 MAY 1822 at the Cathedral Manchester.
I've looked at a map of Pendleton and saw that there were a couple of breweries in Pendleton so I'm wondering whether Cheshire View was close to one of the breweries.
Regards
Carolyn

Would it be on high ground from which Cheshire could be seen in the distance?

Yes. I suppose in 1839 Cheshire could have been seen from high ground, but there would have still been urban sprawl and lots of smog. Still, on a clear day, up a hill, it would have been possible

Hi,

On the 1841 census it is listed as Cheshire View or Bottom Road.  HO107/543/7 folio 36 page 32 . It is in the Brindle Heath Brow area.
Go to www.old-maps.co.uk
Type in the coordinate boxes 380783 and 399600 >go
Choose the 1848 map on the right
wait until it loads and then click on enhanced Zoom.
You should see Cheshire View just above and to the right of the F in Salford.

Many thanks Mo,
Got the map and found Cheshire view. Can't access HO107/543/7 folio 36 page 32 , far too technical for me. I'll bob into the library and ask for help tomorrow!!!!!

All the best
Carolyn
