Title: Joseph McHolm - Death Record
Post by: percy_veer on Tuesday 11 January 11 09:35 GMT (UK)
I would be grateful if someone could help me find the death record of Joseph McHolm who was last recorded on the 1871 census living at 16 Bridge Street, Dumfries as an Inn Keeper. I've previously looked on Scotlands People, but I couldn't find it.

His wife in 1871 was Mary Ann McHolm

Joseph McHolm was married to Margaret Gracie and also to Mary Ann Cannon. Josephs daughter was Jane Clarke McHolm and she married Michael Barbour   on 18th October 1877 at 16 Bridge Street Dumfries. They moved to Wigan where Michael died on 27th April 1893 at 16 Dicconson Street, Wigan.Michael was a draper.
Michael Barbours father was William Barbour and his grandfather was John Barbour (but records show spelling Barber)
I have just joined rootsweb today so do not know exactly how it works but I have loads of info re Barbours Glencairn etc etc

Hi Nikonfuji,

Welcome indeed to rootschat. Sorry I didn't reply to your post earlier, but I was out of the country last week (I know.....no excuse, I could've checked whilst I was away).  :-[

I would really like to take you up on the offer of any help you have with regards to info about Barbours and Glencairn. I actually have a post with a subject of "Birth & Census Records - Glencairn, Dumfrieshire". Please take a look at this post.

It maybe appropriate to continue this thread on there, or I can open a new post? Let me know.

I'm really grateful for any help you can provide.

Thanks,
percy_veer

Hi I'm new to the group, so I hope I'm posting this correctly. I'm too looking for the death of Joseph McHolm, who according to 1871 census, lived in Bridge St Dumfries, but was from Co Antrim, Ireland. I have reason to believe he was one of 6 sons, mother Margaret, father James and died in 1892. Can anyone confirm this for me? Many thanks

Hi mlmcholm,
I'm not sure if you noticed but Ev posted in this thread that Joseph McHolm died in 1878. Although I haven't found anything to confirm this, so not sure where Ev sourced that information.

It's interesting to see that you say the following:

I have reason to believe he was one of 6 sons, mother Margaret, father James and died in 1892.

I haven't been able to find his parents names and/or siblings.

I would be interested to hear more from you on this.

Thanks.

Hi Percy veer. I have a Joseph McHolm in the 1841 census age 23 in Troqueer, others listed are James, Margaret and Neven. I have a death certificate for Nevin, father James McHolm, mother Margaret (nee Martin). I have other death certs of john,James,Robert with the same parents. That's why I've been looking for death certificate, just to confirm my theory. Oh yes, I'm on the hunt for William's death, born 1811. He could be another sibling!

Percy_veer, I forgot to mention, on Roberts death cert it has Joseph, nephew of deceased as informant. Joseph did have a son Joseph.

Just checked the 1892 death for Joseph, unfortunately doesn't match 'our Joseph'. Back to the drawing board!

Hi mlmcholm,

Ev sourced this from Scotlandspeople, if you look at the post the surname is spelt MCHOLME. I just searched using the information on the post by ev and got 1 hit.

Just to clarify the death of Joseph McHolme was 1878 not 1892.

On the death certificate it states the following:
Profession: Cattle Dealer
When and where died: 16 Bridge Street, Dumfries. 1878 (It does give a date but difficult to determine.....I would guess at August eighteenth).
Age: 63
Name of father & mother:
James McHolme, Cattle Dealer (deceased)
Margaret McHolme (deceased)
Further information: 16 Bridge Street was a public house (I think it still is - but a different name) by the name of The Grapes Inn. Bridge Street flanks the river Nith in Dumfries and is now called Whitesands. If you look at old pictures it shows cattle on this area. I imagine that cattle dealing was going on here. I also know that Joseph McHolme previously had a farm (Woodhead) in Troqueer and was born in Co. Antrim in 1817.
From what I know he had at least 7 children (4 boys 3 girls). Jane Clark McHolm(e) one of his daughters was my great grand mother who married Michael Barbour at the Grapes Inn (how strange was that!) on the 18th October 1877. They moved to Wigan. Lancashire as Michael Barbour made a living as a draper.

Percy_veer. Thanks so much for that, it all fits. All the other death certs had same father, James McHolm, cattle dealer. Our family link is through John, one of Joseph's brothers, he would be our greatx2 grandfather. Love it when a mystery gets solved! Just William ( born 1811?) to find. His 1st son was also James, as with the other brothers, so considering the naming pattern, it's a possibility!

This is a very late reply  :)
Do you have information as to where any of the family members are buried?
