Hi
I am trying to find the parents of Katherine/Catherine Aitken. I have Katherine being born 26 Dec 1785 in Abbotshall. Her parents are listed as John Aitken and Mary Illson. I have been unable to find a Mary Illson in Scotland but there is a bunch in England although I find no mention of a marriage to a John Aitken.
Katherine married George Hunter b 2 Apr 1786 Kinghorn on 23 Nov 1804 in Kinghorn.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hi Weasel1 :)
do you have the other 11 children born to a couple with those names ?
all baptised abbotshall , looks like katherine was a twin
i to can't see a marriage for the parents
however if you check the marriage records for abbotshall on the IGI
batch number M113997 there are a few aitken marriages around 1780
some of which have the same christian names as the children
ev
-
john aitken born 1st august 1761 , baptised 10th august 1761 abbotshall
parents james aitken and janet brown
i note that john aitken and mary illson's first child was james and the other
twin daughter was janet
there seems to be aitken's in abbotshall from at least the early 1700's
ev
-
james aitken and janet brown's childrens names
seem to match up very well to
john aitken and mary illson's childrens names
(helen = nelly ?)
(lilias = lilly ?)
not proof but interesting :-\

weasel1 :) (in reply to your PM)
try here first -
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm#Menu
select scotland , then fife , then look at abbotshall
C = christenings M = marriages , each number shows the years covered
make a note of the batch numbers you are interested in
now go to the IGI Index -
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true
enter in the batch number you want Cxxxxxxx or Mxxxxxxx
in region box - select british isles
in last name box put aitken
then search
this should bring up all aitken christenings or marriages in abbotshall for
the time period you have selected
by entering other information such as mother and father's names on christenings you can narrow down the results
note that if the other information is not there you will get no results

Where did the information on her parents come from?
-
sancti
The parents came from ici birth records
-
Did you get confirmation from her death record to see if there was a transcription error?
-
Sancti
I did not find her death record. I have her birthday and her marriage to George Hunter only. I'm also a rookie at finding this info.
-
Does the marriage record give both her parents names?
-
sancti
It does not list any parents in the record that I find.
-
I'm trying to establish how you confirmed that the marriage you found was for the daughter of those parents.
-
weasel1 :)
Sancti has a fair point
if you can give what you are sure of then maybe together we can get some
answers
we're all here to help ;)

Hi
I know that George Hunter born 8 Jul 1819 in Kirkcaldy was the son of George Hunter and Catherine/Katherine Aitken as stated on George's birth records and I find George's marriage to Catherine/Katherine Aitken 23 Nov 1804 in Kinghorn. The only Katherine that I find that could fit date wise is the one with John Aitken and Mary Illson. That probably means that I am jumping to conclusions
-
might even need to go back again :)
never try to make things "fit"
you might get lucky but that seldom happens
so start from what you are sure of .....
then ask questions , lots of people on here would be willing to help

So now I am asking to try to find the Katherine/Catherine Aitken that married George Hunter 23 Nov 1804 Kinghorn and the mother of George Hunter shoemaker born 8 July 1819 Kirkcaldie
-
It is best to verify all records
George Hunter born 8 Jul 1819 in Kirkcaldy
I take it that George is from your line and his death confirmed his parents as George Hunter and Catherine Aitken.
-
yes sancti verified the correct George Hunter according to my mother who's daughter Helen was my her grandmother
-
Who when and where did George marry?
-
Sancti
Sorry for the delay I was called out of town.
George from what someone from another site told me was that he married Janet Hunter 10 Feb 1844 Alloa Clackmanshire. I know that George and family shows on the 1851 census as being married to a Janet and was living at 109 Pleasance St Cuthberts Edinburgh. I was having difficulty finding who he marry so I asked for help at that time and that was the info I was given. He definitely is the correct George
-
If you get Georges death certificate, after 1855, it should tell you who he was married to and the names of his parents.
Do any of Georges children have middle names that could give clues to grandparents?
-
I do not have any middle names for any of the children just Gunn and Simpson for George's daughter Helen. I trace the Simpson but have never found the Gunn.
-
50 main st north leith edinburgh(1881)
george hunter 61 married bootmaker b. kirkcaldy fife
if this is george then there is no family present
ev
-
you must be talking about the 1881 census. it shows family in the 71 census same address the 91 census shows him and Janet at 3 Couper St Leith. The family is also show in 61 at 8 North Blk of Canongate Edinburgh. The 51 census that I mentioned earlier has them living at 109 Pleasance St Edinburgh St Cuthberts
-
Just went back through some of my saved files and I found Helen, George's daughter's wedding certificate and it shows George as a bootmaker and his wife Janet's maiden name as Hunter as well, so it looks like we may have the correct marriage for George and Janet
-
i found the 1851 census on freeCEN website
in 1881 janet hunter age 60 and her son alfred hunter age 15 are visiting the married daughter mary ramsay(nee hunter) age 24
middle names(parents george hunter and janet hunter)(from the IGI)
alfred tulloch hunter born 18th oct. 1865 leith
james gale hunter born 19th nov. 1860 edinburgh parish
as Sancti has already noted the next step would be to find george hunter's
death cert.
looking at scotlandspeople website(and given that you have him on the 1891
census) i found -
george hunter death 1891 leith midlothian born c1820
perhaps you can check with your other sources to see if they have that :-\

EV
I'll post to my other source and see what happens. I will let you know.
-
This might be George in 1841
Alexander Jameson 30
Janet Jameson 30
Janet Jameson 3
Primrose Jameson 1
Alexander Mood 25
George Hunter 25 born Scotland occ Shoemaker J
Address: Cullers Close Alloa
-
Their son James was 4 months old on the 1861 census and if you view his birth on Scotlandspeople it will give his mothers maiden name
-
Hi(Cousin?) Weasel
George Hunter , bootmaker , born c.1819 Kirkcaldy and his wife Janet Hunter were my great great great grandparents!
I have been trying for what seems like forever to prove that George was the son of George Hunter and Catherine Aitken . (His 1891 death cert has a different mother's name - Elizabeth Howie or maybe Hardie depending on what you make of the handwriting ).
The Gunn middle name probably comes from Agnes Hunter( an elder sister of your Helen and my gg grandfather James Gale Hunter) who married David Robertson Gunn and moved to Argentina.
I have done a fair bit of research into the family and also the descendants of George Hunter m. 1.Catherine Aitken and 2. Mary Dow in the hope of matching them up ... if it's of any use to you let me know..

A long shot replying to posts from 2011 but worth a try...
Recently I've been researching the George Hunter from Kirkcaldy who (possibly/probably?) married 1st Catherine Aitken and 2nd Mary Dow.
I have DNA matches that go back to George and Catherine's children. My unproven theory as yet, is that Catherine Aitken was the daughter of John Aitken and Mary Illson, and John Aitken is the brother of my ancestor Janet Aitken (daughter of James Aitken and Janet Brown) who married William Gibson.
Hopefully someone is out there still who may know about this :)
