Title: Elizabeth Stephenson - Yarm abt 1814
Post by: origins on Tuesday 25 January 11 11:19 GMT (UK)
This lady is  a mystery, says born abt 1814 Yarm.   If anybody has access to that particular parish I wonder if they would be so kind as to look this up for me.   Unfortunately she died in abt 1853, so have no other census to compare birth place.

Many thanks
Val

Yes that is her married to Francis Swales.  There are a few Trees with her, but nobody seems to know who her parents were.   I am looking for her baptism, names of parents and any other information, occupation of father.

Thanks Val

Thank you so much that is very kind of you.  I do doubt that my Stephensons have anything to do with Robert Louis though.

Many thanks Val

HI,

No I don't have her death certificate.  Have so many other certificates to get, it's a bit expensive.

Thanks Val

Hello, I realise this is an old thread, but thought it might be worth a stab. I have recently started researching my family history through the Stokesley Grainge family. It appears that I descend from Elizabeth Stephenson and Francis Swales through thier daughter Christiana (Swales) Grainge. I have Elizabeth as born in Yarm 1813, and Francis as born in Aycliffe 1814. Does anyone have any further information on Elizabeth, Francis or Christiana? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

There seems to be a lot of Elizabeths, Francis and Christianas in both the Swales and Stephenson families. Unpicking it all is going to be interesting.

Hi Stevie,  Elizabeth Stephenson 1814 Yarm was my 3rd great aunt. She was the daughter of Edward Stephenson  and and Mary Gill.  She was baptised at Hutton Rudby in 1814.  She married Francis Swales in 1833 at Stockton.  Francis was born  1814 Aycliffe the son of Francis Swales 1783 and Christiana Stephenson 1777 Whitby.  There is some contention who Christiana was, however I believe this is her.

Hoe this helps with your Tree.   Val

That's great Val. Thanks for your help. During my research on ancestry.com I have found prison records for a Francis Swales. In 1858 he is imprisoned in York for aiding a Margaret Stephenson to commit bigamy. Have you any knowledge of this and could it be Elizabeth Stephensons Francis? Also in 1848 a 33 year old Francis Swales, a sedgefield potter, is sentenced to 2 months in Durham gaol for an assault. Worse still, a Francis Swales appears in York in 1851 charged with bestiality. There are no further details attached to these records and I'm hoping 1851s Francis is unrelated.

This Francis was 25.  Margaret 18, and she is the one who committed bigamy by marrying Francis!  According to newspaper

The Leeds Intelligencer and Yorkshire General Advertiser.
06 March 1858
