Hi
Am researching my husbands family. His Grandfather born in 1883 in Cwmystwyth, worked in the coal mines in South Wales. In the 1911 census he was lodging at 11 Thompson Villas, Ynysybwl. We know he fought in the war and then returned to work as a miner. He died in 1929 we believe in a mining accident. I have sent for several death certificates but can't find the right one as their are several with the name Thomas Thomas. Can anyone help?

I can't find him in this list of accidents.....
http://www.welshcoalmines.co.uk/DisastersList.htm
but this website
http://www.thomaslewisroughcollier.freeservers.com/siblings.htm
mentions a Thomas killed in Waterloo pit in 1929. However I can't find out any further info at the moment.....

Hi Helen :)
Do you know where he and his wife were buried? What was his wife's name and do you have their marriage certificate? Where and when were his children born? Perhaps a birth certificate may help find a later address (than 1911).
Kind Regards
Morgan

Hi
Many thanks for the replies
Very sorry but Thomas killed in Waterloo pit is not my Thomas Thomas.
He is buried with his wife in Mynydd Bach cemetary, Trisant about a mile from the family home where his wife lived and had their children. He was always a lodger in South Wales.

Hi Helen :)
The date of death from the grave should help you to obtain the correct death certificate. Also to look for reports and obituaries in local newspapers (including Trisant), and for any compensation awards.
Kind Regards

Hi Morgan
Thankyou for the suggestions, but the headstone only has the year of death on it. Will have to find the time to visit the archives or the National Library I think.

Hi Helen
Wonder whether the South Wales Miners Library, Hendrefoilan, Swansea may be able to help?
They have a lot of useful materials and may be able to advise where you can obtain records of compensation paid to the family.
Also I believe that Glamorgan / West Glamorgan Archives have compensation records for colliery accidents as part of the Coal Board Archive.
According to Hansard, there were 994 men killed in accidents underground during 1929.

Hi,
I think there is a chance this accident below may-be his. He may have died from the injuries he received from the accident just a few days later, maybe at home/hospital and not on site at the mine- hence your oral family story of being killed in a mine accident.
Do you have your Thomas's birth cert?
THOMAS Thomas (injured) age 43
Date, 03/06/1929 (which would make this Thomas's birth year about 1886 - 3 years out to your given birth year, but remembering this is a transcription, and also ages can be recorded incorrectly on mine accident reports, one of mine is)
Occupation -Haulier
Colliery -Lady Windsor ( which is in Ynysbwl)
Owner - Ocean Coal Co Ltd
County - Glamorgan
Run over by journey. The above info can be found here http://www.cmhrc.co.uk/site/database/result/91778.html
Which Thomas Thomas death certs have you got that weren't him( age, vol/page, quart reg district, or just the full date of death will do and reg district? ) - just so that anyone searching for you in the indexes can rule those out from their search results - it will narrow the Thomas list down a bit, save time .
Have you got this death? Thomas Thomas vol 11a page 573, second quart, reg district Pontypridd age 44
It seems to be the nearest to your given age of 46 ( born 1883) and in one of the right reg districts for where he was living and apparently died - this one was born abt 1885 ( death ages are only as accurate as the person giving the information -, so can't really be relied on for the person's true age). - The quarter, and near age also fits in nicely with the above accident date
I can't seem to find any others that look as if they maybe him to me - the 24 others for that year , many of them their ages are too way out for my liking, and some of the ones around his age are in the totally too far off reg districts
Hope that is of some help
Kind regards :)

Hi,
Helen, just a simple question : which death certs have you got (per your original post)? What does it say on the certificates that you have for you to rule them out?
Kind regards:)

Hi
Cell many thanks for all the research. I have looked on that website with no success kept bringing up too many names to show them all and wouldn't let me narrow the search down.
Have sent for the death certificate you suggest as I agree with you it seems the most likely even though the age isn't correct but near enough as you say it depends on what info the mining company had for him.
The last certificate I sent for was Merthyr 11a 744 Thomas age 46, better age but was registered by his brother David which my Thomas did not have. Also a Thomas died Llanelly age 45.
Thankyou very much for all the help.
Fingers crossed this is the right one.

Hi,
Helen I've got my fingers crossed for you.
I know how much frustration it is to research names like this ( The reason why I read your post in this first place> I have Thomas Thomas's in my family and also have how many of my lot in they mines who died _ I've traced mine in the end but it took a few years to do it .
I really do hope this death cert is him - it is the one I'd personally go for myself -If it turns out not to be him it's still a step further to eliminating
All my fingers are crossed for you xxx- please let us know the outcome when you get it. Hopefully this is you man
Very Kind regards

Hi Cell
Have just received the death certificate for Thomas Thomas and believe this is more likely to be him. He is aged 44 on it so that is a year closer to his age. Also on the 1911 census he was lodging at 11 Thompson Villas so is reasonable to presume that after the war he would go back to the same area to lodge and work.
Details are died 3/6/1929 at Lady Windsor Colliery
age 44
Of 20 Thompson Villas, Ynysybwl
Accidentally killed by being run over by coal train
Informant a certificate received from the coroner inquest held on 5/6/1929
Thankyou very much for the help and advice
