Title: Gwaelod y Brithdir .... pre 1917
Post by: Welsh Girl on Wednesday 02 February 11 16:10 GMT (UK)
I wonder if anyone could suggest please, where a person might be buried in 1881, if they lived in Tirphil ....  ???

Burials in Brithdir (where the rest of them were put to cwtch) didn't start until 1917 .....

Bedwellty maybe?  There are a few little Chapels around the area, but they didn't have much (if any) burial land attached to them, and they also tended to be the front room of peoples houses !!

Thanking you very muchly  ;)

There is  an very old cemetery  high on the mounatin in between Brithdir and Tirphil it is known as Capel Brithdir,   the Chapel was burnt down in 1950`s there are lots of old graves there although myself i cannot find out if any records survived, also Pentwyn Cemetery near Fochriw or St Sannans Bedwellty  and Rhymney Village has a Cemetery,

Thanks Jaz ... I think, logically, it's like to be either the Capel, or Bedwellty (St Sannans) ....

I have a feeling the majority fo the burials at the Capel were scarlet fever caused deaths ..... odd piece of information I recalled :)

Hello Dannemois
I have just found your message on Rootschat, and have been looking for a likely cemetery for my Great Great Grandfather John Davies. He was born in 1832 in Llanboidy, but I have him in the 1891 census living at Church Terrace, New Tredegar, with his wife Mary & children Alice & Daniel.
He served with the 2nd/15th East Yorks Regiment, and returned from India in July 1881.
I can't find him or Mary on the 1901 census, so assumed they may both have died.
Daniel is in the 1901 census at Fothergill Row, Cwmsyfiog /New Tredegar - he married in 1892.
So I assume the family didn't move far from New Tredegar.
Is there a database with death records associated with the cemeteries around New Tredegar for the years around 1900?
Several years ago, I was provided with excellent information re deaths & burials from the Merthyr Tydfil Bereavment Services for another branch of the family, which provided addresses etc so was fairly easy to confirm the right person found.
If I could find a similar service for New Tredegar, I would be very pleased!!
Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Charlie
