Title: William Davies
Post by: Daiwalker on Saturday 05 February 11 09:47 GMT (UK)
??? HI ALL, I'm currently researching my 2ND great grandfather William Davies and cant find his 1871 and 1901 census records. William was born in 1854 in Llantrisant to Edward and Mary Davies. The 1861 census states that he was living in High st., Llantrisant with his mother and father and also his brother and sister Evan and Hannah. In the 1871 census Edward, Mary, Evan and Hannah are living in the Bullring, Llantrisant but William is not on the census. I next find him in 1874 when he marries Sarah Elizabeth Crockett in Pontypridd. In 1881 census I find him in Pentre in the Rhondda then in Union St., the Graig, Pontypridd in 1891. After this I can't find him. Sarah his wife is still living in Union St in 1901 but no sign of William, making me think he has died by then. William was a shoemaker by trade and i wonder whether he left home in 1871(aged 17) to persue an apprenticeship.
I wonder if anyone can help me and try and find these missing census records and maybe even a death record.
Thank you for your time.

Hi

If I have the correct census for Sarah in 1901 I note that she lists herself as a widow, however also in the 1901 census it would appear that Edward and Mary Davies the parents of William are still alive, although transcribed as David, and living with them is William, son , single b 1854 Llantrisant - occupation shoe maker, they are living at George St not far from Bull Ring, Llantrisant which is where you found them in 1871.

Edward David Head b 1827 Calstone (I think should be Colwinston) Glam - Woolen Weaver
Mary Wife b 1822 Llantrisant
Thomas son single b 1847 - Shoe maker
William son single b 1854 - Shoe maker

Could this be him???

Will look to see if I can find him in the 1871.

Regards

Z :)

HI

Sorry, no luck in the 1871 I'm afraid!!! If you think it could be him in the 1901 census it might be worth you looking for him and Sarah in the 1911 census, we are unable to post 1911 census info here but it might be worth your while and could offer you some further clues as to what happened.

Regards

Z :)

Hi there, thanks for your feedback. I have found a William David living in Colwinston with his grandparents thomas and catherine in the 1871 census  and it says he is a cordwainer by occupation which is a shoe maker.
Sounds to me as if the surname David and Davies may have changed over the years. Your information has opened up a new line of investigation. Thank you very much for your help it gives me a lot to think about. Many regards
