whoops...you are right about meredeth........thank you so much for the look up, it has helped me alot....agnes and william are definatly my great grranparents. meredeth looks to be the right one as well with his wife mary, they had a son called meredeth as well and he died when he was 4 yrs old. as he is not listed with them, i'll assume he would have been an older child maybe,.....i'll have to do a bit of snooping there. if you are able could you maybe jump forward to the1871 census for these people to see if anymore children came along ? i am very gratefu lfor what you have done for me already, i dont want to push my luck......big thank you's sent your way...from heather

There is an entry on the pilot site http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start for an Agnes Hail Colligan b. 14 May 1881 in Shotts Lanarkshire to Meridth and Mary Hardie. Agnes' birth fits well with that 1891 census entry from earlier (was Meredith's mother Agnes Hail?).
Meredith looks to be the last son of William and Agnes. From 1871:
William Calligan 49, miner
Agnes H Calligan 58
Meredeth Colligan 16 miner
Thos Smith 25 boarder
Address: 87 Muirhead Rd, Shotts
1881 and Meredith married by now:
Merideth Colligan 25, Lab At Iron Mines
Mary Colligan 20
Margaret Colligan 2
Address: No. 72 Benhar Messrs R. Addie & Sons Houses, Shotts

Hi Heather
I am currently transcribing company records from our Scottish shale oil museum collection and have just come across the name Meredith Colligan in a tenancy book as living at No 46 Pumpherston / Work Rows, Mid Calder, West Lothian from 04/12/88 to 04/08/1890. These houses were owned by the Pumpherston Oil Company to house their workforce of shale miners and oil workers.
Given that Meredith Colligan is , I think?, an unusual name, and that he worked as a miner in and around the West Lothian area I thought I would just drop you a line, particulary as the dates fall between any census information you may have.
We are in the early stages of our project, some of our transcribed records are available to search on our website (www.scottishshale.co.uk) at the moment but as I have only just entered Meredith's record just now you will not find it yet. It may be that we find other records as the project progresses.

Hi ScottishShale
Welcome to RootsChat :)
The website looks great and, as you say, will develop further over time. I will add it to the list of resources for the Lothian and Lanarkshire boards. You may also want to add a new post on the General Scottish Resource board, for everyone to see www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,367.0.html
