Hi

Did they continue to live around the Nottinghamshire area?  and any thoughts on when she died?

I can't see a Whitwell born Clara at first glance on the census returns, but there is one Mansfield born in 1880 which would be the correct age for marriage in 1904.

if we can find when she died we may be able to track back her birth but the marriage certificate would be the most helpful thing to get as we would get her father.

I'll keep looking though!

Whitwell, Derbyshire was in the registration district of Worksop, Nottinghamshire (Registration County) from 1837 until 1936.

That may cause some confusion!

There is a Clara Watson dying in Mansfield District (which I think would cover Warsop) in October/November/December 1963, aged 84 years of age (making her born around 1879).  There is one other possible (the rest of the ones are too far out on ages/years of death) dying in Nottingham district 1967 aged 97, therefore born around 1870.

the mansfield one is more likely to be her as its right area, closer to 1960.  will see where the Mansfield one takes me.

edited : to include (or exclude!) one Clara, did she and James have a son called Sidney?

Hi Ruth,
thanks for looking. Yes there was a son Sidney born 1905.
Sorry if I sound a bit stupid on this line of research, but Sidney's son has only just started researching his family and as a volunteer at my local library, I have decided to introduce him to rootschat.
Hopefully he has now registered and is monitoring this.

think I may have found her then - i think she is the Mansfield born Clara, but spent some time living in the Sheffield area as a child.

will edit when I find the census.... ;D

1901 census -  living at Anston St James, Yorkshire (but registration district Worksop - RG13 3128/16/24) with a Joseph & Sarah Jane Bland, just has Clara down as a visitor. Her birth place is given as Mansfield in 1901

1891 census - living at Rough Breck Lodge, Carburton, Worksop, Nottinghamshire (RG12 2647/185/1)

George Jepson, Head, 41, Gamekeeper, born Clipstone, Nottinghamshire
Mary Jepson, Wife, 37, born Elksley, Nottinghamshire
Harry Jepson, Son, 13, born Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
Clara Jepson, Dau, 11, born Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
Alice Jepson, Dau, 9, born Sheffield, Yorkshire
Herbert Jepson, Son, 6, born Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire
Edith Jepson, Dau, 4, born Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire
Flora Jepson, Dau, 2, born Walesby, Nottinghamshire

1881 census - living at 17 Stevenson Road, Attercliffe, Sheffield, Yorkshire (RG11 4666/136/15)

George Jepson, Head, 31, General Labourer, born Clipstone, Nottinghamshire
Mary Jepson, Wife, 27, born Elksley, Nottinghamshire
Harry Jepson, Son, 3, born Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
Clara Jepson, Dau, 1, born Mansfield, Nottinghamshire

just tried to find George & Mary Jepson in 1901 as clearly Clara is living away from her parents - haven't found them so far (edited : see below  :D) but her sister Edith is an "Inmate" Knitter at Clapton Road, Hackney, London.  It was a Salvation Army Nurses Home

George & Mary Jepson in 1901 are living in Whitwell (there's your Whitwell connection! ;D)
(RG13  3129/53/7)

High Street, Whitwell

George Jepson, Head, 51, Gamekeeper, born Clipstone
Mary Jepson, Wife, 47, born Elksley
Herbert Jepson, Son, 16, Colliery Pony Driver (below), born Edwinstowe
Florrie Jepson, Dau, 12, born Walesby
Emma Jepson, Dau, 8, born Whitwell, Derbyshire

the eldest son Harry is registered in 1877 (December quarter) in Mansfield so George and Mary's marriage could feasibly be a few years earlier

There is a Basford marriage between a George Jepson and Mary Hunt in 1875 but no way of telling yet that its them.

Hi all.....

There is this marriage at Elkesley....and as Mary gives her place of birth as Elkesley it looks a likely candidate.

Marriage at Elkesley - 11th Dec 1876
GEORGE JEPSON & MARY WELLS

Thanks a lot you guys, that has been a great help. I think that was quite tricky for a beginner but you have given Sidnet's son a great start.

hi Dizzifish,
interesting about the marriage of George and Mary, as James Edward Watson ( husband of Clara Jepson ) was the son of Eliza Wells b. 1853 in North Scarle, Lincs.
Will be working on that now to see if there is a connection.

Hi All,

As a Jepson researcher I have happened across this interchange - Clare and James Edward Watson are in the 1911 census, at 49 Alexandra Street, Warsop - With two children Sidney born 1906 and Alice born 1908.

Hi, I am brand new on here and am wondering if you can help me find bigjon or dizzifish or rutht22000 as they were chatting about my great aunt Clara Jepson on here and they mentioned about her and James Watson's son Sid and that his son was trying to find family. My grandmother Edith Jepson and Clara Jepson were sisters and have all details of family, George Jepson,my great grandfather married Mary Wells Jepson. Could you help me find Sid's son? be most grateful and will be glad to give any other info that you are needing.

I saw your post on here about Clara Jepson. Her sister,Edith Jepson, was my grandmother. My mother's mother was Edith and when Edith died young after having four children, Edith's sister Alice came to America and married my biological grandfather Franklin Harwood, so she became my grandmother too. I would like to find Clara's grandson, Sid's son if you could help me. thanks

Hi, I've recently signed up on here but have seen a chat that was on here a few years ago with bigfish, dizzifish, rutht22000 and JepsonHarwood. I'm the great granddaughter of Clara Jepson, wife of James Edward Watson. My grandmother who is now 93, is the daughter of Clara Jepson, has been telling me all about the family and I'm interested to know more.
Any info on this would be great, plus if anyone wants to find out more from me I could have some info too.
