There is a final push to get this petition signed prior to Thursday...
It is threatened with demolition
www.clevelandstreetworkhouse.org
Pse consider signing...Its the last virtually complete one left...
-
Signed :) Hate seeing old historical buildings being demolished, to be replaced by bland housing :(
-
Thanks for bringing it to our attention Scrimnet
signed :D
-
i will def sign it!
one suggestion though, i often scroll through the new subjects posted to see if anything interests me. i had overlooked this thread a few times because i assumed it was another thread about workhouse life, and i have read a lot of that in the last few days! maybe a little name change on the title to urgent petition needs a look at. or something similar :D
-
just signed. would be very sad if this was to go just so much history behind it
-
Also signed.
Just been looking at a book of pics of old Middlesbrough, some wonderful buildings, and the majority of them demolished in the 1960s. Disgraceful.

Thank you all...Keep em coming! ;D ;D

Signed it on Tuesday. Petitions can help, look at the climbdown over the forest sale.
-
I've just signed it, too. It's such a shame to see history being erased like this.
-
Has this petition run out of time now?
Just that there seem to be more articles appearing about it.

Thanks to Steve for the link from the Nathanial thread ;D

The same fate is likely for Plomesgate Workhouse in Suffolk - featured in this BBC news article:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0bz3/
Such a shame that our Victorian heritage is treated with such disrespect.
-
Dear God. Demolition of our heritage is awful. Lets hope that can be saved as well.
-
I suppose it is part of a cunning plan worthy of "Blackadder" The idea to put the idle poor to work in workhouses, first demolish the remaining historic workhouses, then build new ones thus generating a little employment in the building trade for cosmetic purposes, and then house the "able bodied" poor who say they are unable to work having been disqualified from disablement benefits by the newly introduced tests. What a rubbish system!!
-
Good news. :)

Great! Hope it stays listed and isn't recommissioned.
-
YES! Fingers crossed that the decision is not appealed. I'd like to see it preserved rather than "converted" into housing or office space and ruining it.
-
Well done Scrimnet - a pleasure to sign this important petition!

Also signed ;D

My fear is it would be re-opened to serve its original purpose.

um ... :-\ ( ;))
Maybe another institution of some sort? Or simply a tourist destination set up as it used to be in Dickens time. A "Dickens precinct" would be interesting ... :)

It would make a useful set for a Newsnight in depth enquiry into urban deprivation in a few months time.

an article in today's Daily Mail about the workhouse
