Title: William SLY
Post by: adcor on Monday 28 February 11 01:15 GMT (UK)
Hi everyone,

Could someone please help or direct me as to how I can find information on my  William SLY.

It would appear that the information I have so far on him is correct.  I would like to confirm that he was in fact a Captain in the Yeomanry Guards, Ferns Wexford.  William was born around 1790 in Ferns.  He came to Australia on 1841 aboard the Cunard.  Sadly in 1842 he was lost at Sea near Tasmania Australia.  He left behind family.

William was my g.g.g. grandfather.

Regards

Adcord

This William Sly is also my g-g-g grandfather,   I am descended from his son John have
reams of info on this family,   he was born in Co Wexford Ireland,  (Fern) I believe Sarah (Doyle) family is buried in the Ferns Church, and Williams father also in the same Church. (I am fortunate to have record of the Ferns Church.  Can verify William was drowned while inspecting his land in Tasmania in 1841,   (story written by his son for the Mercery years latter I have a copy off).

Hi and thank you for making contact - I have a photo of John Sly (Junior)taken in America with his niece and descendants.

I haven't touched the Sly family for a while.  Mainly because Nobody had made contact for a while.  I presume you are in Australia.  I am interested in learning what I can.  Have you been able to look at all of my previous postings.  If not, I can fill you in on my descendancy.  If you would like to make contact by email, please let me know.

Regards

Hi, William Sly descendents.
I spent some time researching the Wexford and Carlow Sly (sometimes spelled Syle) families for a Sly currently living in Carlow. I was born in County Carlow, County Wexford adjoins Carlow.
Search Google enter Lucinda Sly Carlow hanged in Carlow for murdering her husband. A priest spent time/attended Lucinda before her execution and wrote an account. To answer one question posted the Sly's were a Protestant family and yes William is recorded as being in the yoemanry militia.  I screengrabbed the record from digitised original Bagenalstown, Carlow troop for 1798. One of the Carlow Sly's was accused of killing a Catholic priest in 1835 - the trial was well documented - see The death of Fr John Walsh at Kilgraney by Maura Cronin. To view the Yeomanry record search for Carlow Yeomany in the Virtual Records Treasury of Ireland. Provided the Carlow Sly contact all details of my research.

I see no listing for any Sly memorial in Ferns Old (Cathedral) graveyard.

There is no listing for any Sly in the civil parishes of Clone, Ferns and Kilbride in 1776. That also includes Ballycarney.

It is possible that post 1798 Wexford Sly's moved across the border to Carlow. Walter Sly and his brother (Archibald if my memory serves) lived near where present day Sly's live in Carlow. One of the brothers  also had a connection with old Leighlin. There is a record of a William Sly in the Yeomany Returns detailing his pay and his signature for said payment. "The government paid the Yeomanry for their service. In 1798, about 50,000 members of the Yeomanry fought alongside the British Militia. Their ranks included a mix of Church of Ireland members, Catholics, and Presbyterians." In the Carlow Returns the commanding officers of the individual troops for different locations in the County were mostly well known Protestant landowners see https://www.igp-web.com/Carlow/1798_and_Carlow_08.htm
The Yeomany Returns shows a significant number of Irish surnames, at one stage Catholics were originally excluded from the Yeomany I cannot remember the year but at some time before 1798 it was agreed that trustworthy Catholics could join.

There are a number of Sly entries in the Ferns ML index, including:
Mary Rawsome and Edward Sly 1747
May be of interest because of the nearby Rawsome family - see current thread on that family.
Note that this ML is only indexed under Rawsome, not under Sly - an omission by the indexer.

Again from Ferns ML:
The John Sly who married Mary Dix in 1760 is a candidate for the John and Mary in the 1776 census.
