I am looking for any information on the Fooks family who resided in the Woburn area in the 1800's. I would be so grateful for anything. Thank you.
-
Hi and welcome to the forum. "1800's" is 100 years long, and without more specific information we'd be guessing which of the Fooks would be yours.
Please start us off by whatever information you have and what you need and we'll try from there.

Thomas Fooks born in 1845 son of James Fooks and Elizabeth Line. Thomas died in Woburn in 1867 . Also James Fooks was born in Odell, Beds in 1774 and Elizabeth Line was also born in Odell in 1776, they both married in Odell in 1803.

You have gone quite a way back, do you have all the census details that you need? If it's earlier information that you need, you will have to spread your research out a bit, not only parish registers, including burials in the area, but Wills, Rent Books, Land Registers and whatever else that might be available at the local Record Office.
-
Hi Ernie; Don't know where you got your data from. but James Fooks married Elizabeth Line at Steppingly on 31 Oct 1803, not Odell. Nor is there a baptism of him at Odell. The Elizabeth Line baptised at Odell on 14 Apr 1776 was daughter of Joseph & Ann Line, & probably went on to marry Thomas Gostwick, widower of at Carlton, Beds on 31 Mar 1795
Regards John

The 1851 census has James Fooks age 68 born Crawley, Beds on parish relief & wife Elizabeth age 71 born Steppingly; do you reckon they could produce a son six years previously? Have we missed a generation.
-
Hi John ...
On looking at IGI I think his year of birth should read as 1807 son of James & Elizabeth.
Siblings listed as Zilpah bapt1811 Isaiah bap 1809 .
Fooks also appear in Husbourne Crawley and across to the Brickhills (Grt & Lit) in Bucks.
Spellings may play a part as I have Foulkes and have various spellings... Folks Fookes Fooks as it changes with each generation.

I think it makes this his baptism going on age in 1851 census...
Husborne Crawley 1783 29 Sept James FUKS son of Thomas & Sarah.
4 siblings baptised in the village...... 2 have an added "C" in the name !

James Fooks had two sons, Thomas, born 1807 and died in 1867, and Jesse, born 1825, he married a Mary Ann Brown on 9th June, 1845 in the Parish Church, Woburn.
-
Hi Tazzie,
The Sarah you have mentioned in your post, is this Sarah Huckel, 1744 - 1777 as she married James Fowkes, 1740 - ?
I have Thomas Fooks who was born on the 24th July, 1807, died about 1867 in Woburn.
I, also have Zilpah, born 1811 and Isaiah, born 1909. Also Jeremiah,1815, Sussanah, 1816, Sarah 1819 and Eli, 1821.
-
Hi Ernie....
Do you mean 1825 for Jesse ?
Baptisms for Fooks children to James & Elizabeth in Woburn 1813 onwards are ...
Jeremiah 1814
Susannah 1816
Sarah 1819
Eli 1821 & Jesse 1825. all can be found on ..
www.familysearch.org
So including James Zilpah & Isaiah from my previous post 8 children so far .
As John says no baptism in Odell for James senior but the age fits to the baptism in Husborne Crawley.
There is an Elizabeth Lines bapt in Steppingley but age out slightly.

Hi Tazzie,
Yes Jesse was born in 1825, my mistake. Thnks for the other piece of information as I'll look into that. I got my information from another person's family tree in Ancestry.co.uk and I'm trying to verify all this to my tree.
-
Hi ..
Thomas Fuks married Sarah Irons in H/Crawley in 1773.
mine drive me mad with their spelling...also watch out for Foox/ Fox & Faux

Always a good thing to verify other peoples findings. I found a tree that married off my grt nanna to someone else in America and she never actually left Bedfordshire!
If you look on the resources page on the Bedfordshire page part way down are the transcribed records for Woburn Poll Book ..... all the hard work done by Steve Henley James at 9 Leighton End Thomas at 1 Goodmans Court.

Thanks I'll do this.

I married into the Fookes family in 1997 (now divorced) and have 2 children with the surname ! i have traced their line back to Bow-brickhill beds in 1841 but the surname keeps changing folk, fooks etc. I visited the village last year trying to find the church. I stopped two ladies walking a dog who laughed and said it was behind the very large trees!!!!!!!! . I have a few pictures of a Frederick Charles Fookes if interested. will post more info about tree later if you are interested.

Thank you so much for sharing with me this piece of information. I have no way of actually knowing if this is relevant to my tree or not. What I have in my tree is that I haven't Frederick Charles Fookes in it but given the fact that there are Charleses in my tree of Fookes, my middle name is Charles and the other fact is that my ancestors were born and brought up in Beds during the period. Could you tell me their parent's names or any brothers and sisters that you know of? I am very interested to hear anythging at all about the Fookes or whatever pronunciation of it whether it is in my tree or not. There might be a slight chance we could be linked in some way. I'd be so glad to hear from you again.

Hi Messy....Welcome to Rootschat
As you see there are many variations to the Fookes/Foulkes/Folks that appear in this corner of the Beds/ Bucks border.
Would you like John's marraige details for Fanny's maiden name..?
In 1851 Fanny gives Clophill as place of birth and a Fanny Dudley was baptised there in 1812.
She married as Frances Dudley to John Folks in 1831 again in Clophill.
So far I have William Fooks bapt in Bletchley to William Richardson & Elizabeth Fooks ...William marries 2 years later and not to Elizabeth and cannot prove which Elizabeth is mine. Keeps me busy!

Hi Messy - not only welcome you to Rootschat but to the Fooks/Fookes/Fowkes/Fox, etc branch lines.
Thank you for your response to my post it looks like you are on a branch of another tree as I have my ancestors covered during that period though I'm not discounting it out as there could be a link somewhere which I don't know about. I got most of my information on the Fooks from my aunt, my mother's sister and they were born Fooks. I find in most intriguing and enthralling that there are so many different spellings of the name and they appear mainly in the Beds/Bucks border area.

Hi Tazzie, I've not long started trying to trace my tree. I have George Fooks 1773-1842 married to Anne Sinfield. George's parents I have as Thomas Fooks 1747-1827 and Sarah Irons 1749-1807. If you have any information relating to that line, going further back, I'd very much appricate your assistance.
