There are a series of six short films which were shown on STV regarding the Mitchell Library which are very informative and watchable. Great to watch if you are planning a visit to the Mitchell Library for the first time or just curious about the range of their archives relating to Family History:
- Part 1: Elizabeth Carmichael gives us tips on where to start researching your Scottish roots... http://scotland.stv.tv/history/76287-family-history-at-glasgows-mitchell-library/
- Part 2: Elizabeth gives more advice, showing us the census archive and the Evening Times Roll of Honour... http://scotland.stv.tv/home/76288-family-history-at-glasgows-mitchell-library/
- Part 3: Dr Irene O'Brien from Glasgow city archives shows the voters roll and school, sasines and police registers... http://scotland.stv.tv/home/76289-family-history-at-glasgows-mitchell-library/
- Part 4: Dr Irene O'Brien explains the church archives, the Family and estate registers, the Kirk session minutes... http://scotland.stv.tv/history/76290-family-history-at-glasgows-mitchell-library/
- Part 5: Dr Irene O'Brien unveils another useful resource held at the library: the Poor Law Archives... http://scotland.stv.tv/home/76291-family-history-at-glasgows-mitchell-library/

Really does give you a flavour of what is there doesn't it :)
Just an aside, Brian posted this last week www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,520757.0.html regarding the relocation of the Stratchclyde Genealogy Centre at Park Circus to the Mitchell Library from this week.
If I lived nearby, I would never be out of there!

I love the Mitchell Library :D although work gets in the way of serious research, but I'm glad it does - this time last year it was a different story.
I'm attending a very informative & free course run by Dr Irene O'Brien, the City Archivist "Family History Beyond The Basics", it's about the resources & records that lie waiting to be discovered in he Mitchell.
I've also attended Irene's very useful Irish Family History Course - which costs £10 - great for anyone with ancestors from across the Irish Sea.
Today I managed along to use the re-located Genealogy Centre's facilities - I had never been to Park Circus before, but they now have 20 terminals available to use - open between 9:30 and 16:30 Monday to Friday day ticket is £14 and you can do as many searches as you can / want.
Booking is essential - seats are limited and it's a first come first served basis - so if your travelling any distance give them a call first to avoid disappointment.
I must admit I have got used to using the Scotlands People Hub in Edinburgh, which is crazy if you add in the cost of travel / lunch / admission, but I might make more regular bookings at Glasgow - seeing as it's only a few miles from my front door.
They hope to have the Scottish 1911 census available when it's released by the GROS, although there is some software issues / to be resolved first. - If I hear anything I'll post it up.
It is worth noting that although the Strathclyde Genealogy Centre has relocated to the Mitchell Library - they services are run by 3 seperate departments of the Council, but they are all working together but each has it's own rules regarding access / opening times - If in doubt ask at the desk.
1 - Strathclyde Genealogy Centre - run my the City Registrar
2 - Family History Centre / Glasgow Room - Glasgow Libraries (old Glasgow Papers on microfiche, books on Glasgow etc)
3 - Special Archives & Collections - Poor Law, Church Records, Sasines, etc - City Archivist
I'm happy to check poor law applications (work permitting) I've done it for a few folk on here -
Not able or willing to pay for copies but I'll transcribe the applications if found and email them on.
