Title: Cant find his marriage to Emily - Completed
Post by: bigjon on Monday 04 April 11 08:35 BST (UK)
Hi all,
I have William Combes b.1835 Foston, Lincs. on the 1871 census. It shows his wife as Emily. I have found 2 possible marriages for him in this area, but not to an Emily. Can anyone help with this?

Thanks...............bigjon

Hi

I am not sure but there may be something wrong with the indexing.

I have checked various sites, there is an Emily Bentley coming up for 1859 Newark Nottinghamshire, 7b 511, Q2 but no spouse shown. I went on Free BMD and put in the reference 1859, 7b 511 and William Combes did come up but as being married in Newent. Information given about this was that for Newent registration district a reference of 6a would have been expected and not 7b as this was not a valid ref for Newent.

I can only suggest two things, either get in touch with the local registry office and ask them to check whether the Emily Bentley has a spouse William Combes before purchase or get one of the children's birth certificates to see what Emily's maiden name was.

It takes some finding, Emily is in FreeBMD as 7B 571 with 6 transcribers confirming.

I disagree, looking closely at the 2 different films it's Newart 7B 511

You may also notice that they were living in a BENTLEY household in 1861.

Hi Mick

I still think it looks like 7b 511

Evie,

Isn't that what I said? It's the transcribers I disagree with.

Lol, I thought your second sentence was referring to William as in Newent and Newart. Never mind it does look a good match seeing they were with the Bentleys in 1861, well spotted Geoff. Emily is the daughter of Charles and Ann in 1851

I see what you mean, my mistake, I meant Newark 7B 511

Emily's reference when compared to other entries on the GRO image is clearly 7b 511.
I have sent a correction to FreeBMD.

I have also posted a post-em against the entry for William on FreeBMD. There is clearly an indexing error because the district name is in italics on FreeBMD. (Which is why FreeMBD is so superior to any of the subscription sites. They just copy what's written on the page. FreeBMD show that anomalies exist.
Sadly, FreeBMD can't pick up all the errors that exist in the GRO Index. (e.g. if the vicar wrote Smith in the parish register but the GRO Index says Jones, FreeBMD itself doesn't know that there is an error.)

Wow, I think I have followed that! Thanks all you guys for sorting it, I think that confirms that William Combes did marry Emily Bentley at Newark in 1859.

I would also say its newark 7b 511, the top of the 5 running into the 1.

Wel you have details that are transcriptions of transcriptions of transcriptions.... the only sure fire way to be certain is to go to the document nearest to the original source which in this case would be a certificate based on the original register entry.
