Title: The Free Legacy 5 software
Post by: jaq on Friday 11 June 04 12:14 BST (UK)
has anyone tried and tested the free downloadable LEGACY 5 software?
i usually use Ancestry Family Tree [ancestry.com] but it has limitations on printouts.
I downloaded it but am awaiting feedback [please  ;D ]

jaq

ps. downloadable from   http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Download.asp
they say:
"This is the full retail product and you get it for free instead of the $49.95 it's sold for during the past few years.  It's the same Legacy that has received so many great reviews from the press and users alike.  Ask anyone using Legacy and you will hear great things.  It's this enthusiasm of our users that has really helped us build one of the most popular genealogy programs anywhere.  We feel confident that once you give Legacy a try that you will know what all the excitement is about and will want to tell your friends also."

Hi Jaq,

I've been using LEGACY version 4 for about 5 years. have not long ago installed 5.
For me they are excellent, plenty of features that enable you to to do just about anything you would ever need.

Cheers
Geoff

I have to agree with Geoff, I have been using Legacy for several years and found it to be very easy to use.he free version is a complete version and the upgrade to the deluxe version is cheap as well. I also have Family Tree Maker Version 10 but i now only use that for importing information form other F T M users.
Pam you can use Gedcoms with Legacy.

I've been using Legacy for several minutes  ;D

It does all the same stuff as PAF but looks a bit more sophisticated and is a bit more user friendly.

What I don't like at all on this download is the cynical removal of features which should be basic saying they are only available on the "Delux" model.  I'm going to uninstall because it doesn't offer more than PAF in this version.

If you are going to pay for the Delux then it does work very well, very user friendly - I'm just a cheap skate, saving my cash for 1841 Cumberland census!

thanks for the info, all.

Pam, what basic features does it NOT give?
Steve and Geoff, does it allow to print as a wall chart with ALL families [which is really the feature i'm after. I have almost 1000 names and i would like to print it all]

i spose i could just import my existing GED into it and find out myself  :D

I haven't printed a tree with legacy but if no one on here can answer your question try the Legacy users mailing list, it is very good and they  have discussed it in the past but i don't remeber much about it.
Here is the web address for there archives.

Bits missing...

Some report options
Chronology view
Photo archive
Most of the Tools

Hang on - I see what is going on here, it's odd  ???.  The picture central doesn't work from tools but it works from another button on the family view.  Hmmm a bit more investigation.

I am a convert to the web page creation function - much prettier than PAF, I like the lay out.  It is an excellent way of sharing amongst your family.

Cheers,
Pam

Hi Jaq,

I've never tried to print a wall chart of all on the tree. {don't think the wife would appreciate the new wallpaper} I have over 8000 names on my tree. After a quick look I don't think the free version does this anyway.

I have printed Decendant and Ancester lines for each family surname to give me hard copy backup in case everything else fails.
Chronological charts are only permitted on the Deluxe version, this costs about $30 US if I remember rightly.

For photo's I prefer to keep them separate. On photoshop I have nearly 1000 photo's.
These I then burnt to CD and now I screen them through my DVD player onto my TV. {DVD player plays jpg files}

Cheers
Geoff

The program is quiet a bit different than i'm used to, but i'll bear with it for a while and when ready will test the printing capabilities.Geoff thanks for the info too [i can imagine a wallchart as wallpaper  :)

Pam, how you getting on with it? you sound hooked.

Zzzzzzzzz I've been too sleepy to take it through the paces -  we've had a conference the last 2 days.  I'm having difficulty exporting a gedcom to PAF at the moment so may not use legacy until I want one of the functions I think is better - i.e. the website, some reports.  The "oh no you don't cheapskate" pop-ups are annoying.

I use the relationship calculator a lot for chatter on emails and that doesn't work on legacy.  As soon as I get the gedcoms interchangable it'll be fine, I'll have the 2 lots of software.

Hi,
I use Legacy 4.0 , I paid out for the Professional edition, and it is quite a nice tool - see my online tree for an example. I also splashed out for Treedraw Legacy which is a nice way of producing charts and images of the whole tree. Again I have examples and a free viewer available for this. I am not sure whether the free viewer is actually availble at the Legacy site.
Both pieces of software are very good, here are some links

Pam,

You must be doing something wrong if you can't use the relation calculator on Legacy {free}, works fine on mine.

Accessable from the tools tab on the menu bar.

Cheers
Geoff ;)

Nope, it was known once in 1993 an occassion where I was wrong but there are no witnesses to this, well not anymore...  Oooh get her, what's she like ;D

I joke.

If I use say 2 thirds of the options on the Tools menu I get the "buy the delux version pop-up" .  Just tried it again and I definitely get that with the relationship calculator and relationship report.

No problem though I can continue to use PAF for that.

HI Newbie, I have tried to reach my website as well but it is not coming up, I haven't moved it so i presume there is a problem with NTL. I will keep trying and let you know.
You can download a free copy of Legacy it is fully functional, if you do really like it you can upgrade to the Deluxe version.

Hi Steve, Thanx, the website looks good, and separate pages for each family individual (I liked the children's ;D, )
Have decided to invest in Broadband, then download the free trial programs, and then decide. Looking at Rootsmagic, Legacy and TMG.

Hi Newbie, Glad you like the site the homepage and the childrens etc are ones i made and the family history ones are from Legacy.
I use 3 software programmes, My main is legacy plus i also use Family tree maker and PAF, but they are so i don't have to use gedcom's from other people i can just import the right file format instead.

Hi Polly,

Legacy 5 does back up to CD, I've been doing that for years and have twice had to restore from the CD.
No problems with both exercises.

I use NERO as my back up program {as I do, to burn any CD}
You just open the NERO program and follow the prompts which allow you to choose whichever program you want to back up.

A simple enough operation that works well.

Adding to the consensus that Legacy is generally a good programme:  I have been using V5 Deluxe for about a year and it does everything that I want except for two things.

(1) It doesn't output charts in the traditional style of family tree (i.e. top down).  I get round this by using the TreeDraw program (export from Legacy, import to TreeDraw).  TreeDraw isn't too clever and I have to spend some time tweaking it up to look pretty (moving people and lines around).  That is exacerbated by the fact that data isn't synchronised between the two programmes.  When I change anything in Legacy I have to export/import again and do all the tarting up again.  Not ideal but there you go, doing things on the cheap.

(2) It doesn't output a chart of all families.  I know this would get a bit messy for those of you with thousands of names but I am only up to a few hundred so a chart like this wouldn't be too big.  Anyway, if it had such a feature I would expect to be able to exclude whatever branches I desired.

Regarding back-up to various media, I save mine to a USB stick memory.

Hiya JOe,

I gave up  ;D

I just use Legacy now.  The newest version which is free.  I moved PCs and never bothered downloading PAF so I'm just on Legacy.

Steve's webpages aren't available so if anyone wants to see a website produced by Legacy here you go...

http://fallon.rootschat.net/family.html

If you can get past my grandad!

It really is a good structure for sharing a tree.

You can add other pages by creating reports as html as well.

If you are looking at these pages to see whether the programme works for you

http://fallon.rootschat.net/25.html

Where there is an "Occupation" list & a "timeline", that isn't a function of Legacy that is how I type my notes into the General Notes section.
