Thanks to this great website I have discovered that my Gt Grandmother was Lilian Elsie Hingley born in 1889/90. According to the 1901 census she was 12 and living in Walworth London, however, the head of the family is called Walter Whorlay and his wife Minnie. She is listed as daughter. The strange thing is the difference in the surnames as they have several older children with the surname Whorlay and then several younger ones with the surname Hingley, all listed as sons and daughters. Surely is there had been a remarriage this would have been the other way round. Has anyone any idea why this may be listed this way as I am very confused. ???
Thanks

Was Minnie much younger than Walter WHORLAY.... his children from his first marriage could well have been much older than any children Minnie HINGLEY had from her first marriage??

Hi CAZI & welcome to RootsChat
I'm having a job finding this family on the 1901 census. Do you have the census reference - Piece/Folio/Page?

No strangely she was 5 years older than him according to the 1901 census. The Whorlay children were 17 and 15 and the Hingley's ranged from 13 to 6.

Looks like the name is LONGLEY to me... what do others think??
-
I only saw a transript so it's possible that they read the name wrong, thanks for that as the name Whorlay certainly seemed hard to trace in previous census's.

Thanks for this, I wonder if they all lived at the same address and that her paerents weren't there on the day of the census and it's somehow got confused.

Thanks so much again, looks like I may have had the wrong family anyway then. This website and you all are so fantastic. :) I'm in Australia, so need to do all this via the internet, I'm happy to subscribe to get access to census info, BMD etc but not sure which sites are the best ones to do this. I've tried the free ones to get started but where apart from you great people is the best place for me to look up this info for myself.

A lot of us do it all via the internet, wherever we live! :)
A free site for Births Marriages & Deaths is
www.freebmd.org.uk
Census information on Ancestry or Find My Past. Both are good for different things. Full 1911 census information is still only available on FindMyPast. You can sometimes get a free 14 day trial on sites like these, but remember to cancel before the trial period is up or you will get stung for a subscription.
If you need to order BMD certificates NEVER go through any of the search sites - they will overcharge you. Go directly to
www.gro.gov.uk
or one of the local register offices

PS Keep asking questions - we're only too pleased to help :) :)

Where did you find this??
Linda

Hi Cazi :)
Looks like the name is LONGLEY to me... what do others think??
Definitely LONGLEY - the mistranscription might be because Walter is Walter W, and the second W is squished up against LONGLEY, which might make it look like another name (still doesn't look like "Whorlay" to me though). There are a couple of children on one page, and then the younger children are on the next page with a more clearly-written surname of LONGLEY :) (ref is RG13/384/131/17-18 if anyone wants to check)
So no HINGLEYs in that household ;)
Cheers

CAZI
Do you see how this relates to what Prue has given as the reference RG13/384/131/17-18?
year code for 1901 RG13
Piece 384
Folio 131
Page 17 (and in this case p18 as well)
This would narrow a search down to about 30 people

RG13/384/131/17-18
I think that somewhere the members of the family on page 17 have been transcribed as Whorley, and those on page 18 as Hingley - and they're both wrong!
This is why it always pays to look at the original image if you can :) :)
