Hi,
Do you have any connetions with the surname MCBAY/BEY in your tree?
I have a Christiana Gove who married Alexander McBay in 1861 in Sunderland England, but both came from Johnshaven,Scotland.
-
Hi,
No sorry not at this stage. I probably need to dig down a few generations yet to get to the 'outer families'.

Hi Marrel,
Andrew Gove & Mary Ann Duff Strachan were my G-G Grandparents.
Their son Andrew Gove, b 1841 in Benholm, married Martha Begg, b 2 Sep 1837 in Fettercairn, on 29 Dec 1866 in Inverbervie.
Their eldest son was also Andrew Gove, and their second son was Munro Gove, b 1 Aug 1872 in Kinneff. Munro married Bridget Watt, b 18 April 1870 in Stonehaven. They had a total of 10 children, the eldest being another Munro Gove, and their second son was another Andrew! My Mother was number 8! She was Martha Begg Gove, b 14 June 1911.
Speak about keeping the family names going! It took me ages to sort them all out.
My Dad was David Wallace Irvine, b 4 April 1911 in Montrose. Mun & Dad married in StCyrus on 15 April 1943, and I was born there in 1947.
I'd love to hear of your side of the family, as we must be 3rd or 4th cousins or something!
James Munro Irvine

Any idea where the "Fullerton" came from? I'm interested in all by that surname in the general region of Benholm.
-
Hi,
Sorry. I don't have any real evidence of where the Fullerton name comes in. Working theory is that they lived in that area when Ann was born.

Hi,
I have a Margaret Fullerton McBay/Bey b/15 Jan 1845 and an unconfirmed death prior to 1855, parents John McBay/Bey b.1817 Miltonhaven,St.Cyrus and Jean/Jane Hampton b.1815 Johnshaven, married 1838 Johnshaven. I have no records of the name FULLERTON in the McBay line, so I assumned it may have come from the Hampton line which I have not had time to research yet.
McBay,MacBey, are used in this line. I have more information if you are interested on this family.
-
Thanks. If you run into the Fullerton connection, please post it here. I just did a quick check on McBeys and Hamptons using Familysearch.org to see if any familiar names popped up and while there are a few possibilities, none particularly jumped up and grabbed me.
BTW, you say you have the marriage of Jean/Jane Hampton and John McBey in Johnshaven. It was also recorded in St. Cyrus on 16 Sep 1838 according to familysearch.org.
-
I don't know if there is any connection with the "fullerton" in Anne Gove's name but I see that the 1841 census shows an Anne Hampton age 30 living in Fetteresso with Hugh Fullerton and his family.

Hi,
My husband is descended from Andrew Gove & Mary Ann Strachan's son, Alexander b.5 Oct 1839.
I would like to find out more about these Goves.
Thanks.
-
Hi folks.
I'm a few years late in joining this thread but only just starting to re-look at my husbands family tree.
My husbands Gt, Gt Grandmother was Christina Gove born Feb 1853 in Gourdon - parents were Andrew Gove and Mary Ann Strachan. Christina married Alexander Davidson and Gove has been used as a middle name since.
I have that Andrew and Mary Ann had 12 children but except for what I read here about Andrew and what I already have about Christina we know nothing of all the others and their descendants. Would love to make contact with relatives while my father in law is still around.
Regards
Carrie

Hi Carrie,
I have 11 children for Mary Ann and Andrew. I have parents for her and a number of ancestors for him. My husband is through Alexander, the second born. His mother's maiden name was Gove and she is still living (in South Africa).
I have no spouse or descendants for Christina. But I have info on some other siblings. I am happy to work with you to fill out our trees. We can work on this site or by email - which may be easier because of attachments. *
Looking forward to hearing from you, Alisan

Jim,
I don't have John, but I have two you don't have so I see you have just found one of them, thanks to Ev (thanks Ev).
I also have Annabella (1858) of Inverbervie.
I see you are also a descendant.

Hi Alisan,
Yes, I'm related through Andrew, B 9 Dec 1841.
He married Martha Begg on 29 Dec 1866 in Inverbervie.
I haven't as yet sorted out all their family, but they had a son, Munro Gove, B 1 Aug 1872 in Kinneff.
Munro married Bridget Watt on 10 Dec 1897 in Stonehaven.
Munro & Bridget had 10 children. My mother Martha Begg Gove being number 8, B 14 June 1911 in Marykirk.
Martha married David Wallace Irvine in 1943, and had a daughter, Margaret Gove Irvine soon after. She was born extremely prematurely, and only lived 3 days. She would probably have survived with today's technology, but in those days with a war going on, she died.
I was born on 27th July 1947 in St Cyrus, and caused my mother so much bother at my birth, she couldn't have any more children. I'm James Munro Irvine
I can give you more information on my Mother's siblings if you are interested. Mother passed away in 2000, and was the last surviving member of that generation.

Alexander Gove (b.5 Oct 1839) married Jane Clark 1858 in Glenbervie.
They had 4 children, the youngest being Alexander Gove (b13 July 1866 Glenbervie).
Alexander married Jane Duncan Duguid in 1892 Fordoun and they had 9 children.
Child #8, David Gove, married Isabella Wallace Christieson in Montrose 1926 and had 6 children.
Child #2, Daisy Dugid Gove (a teacher) left Montrose for what was then northern Rhodesia. She met and married Lawrence Greeff and, after the birth of their first born, returned to his homeland of South Africa. Their 2nd child is my husband, David.

I've just linked back into this thread that I started - have been away in other 'trees'.
I am delighted to come back and see how many others link to Andrew Gove and Mary Ann Strachan's family.
It seems the surviving members of Andrew and Mary Ann's 12 children spread themselves far and wide.
I am happy to share my information about their daughter Ann Fullerton Gove - my great great grandmother who came to New Zealand married to Robert Whyte - if anyone wants those links, sing out.
I cannot find a birth registration for the daughter Annabella but she certainly appears on the census records and is definitely a different child to Isabella. I was thinking she may have been registered as something else but even on a parent search nothing comes up.
I wonder has anyone managed to find the family in the 1841 census? I've tried several different search tricks and nothing has come up.

Posting this with out going back through the entire thread so it may be unnecessary . . . but just in case you aren't aware of it.
Ancestry.com has at least one family tree for this line, "owned" by a Julia Gove, It shows 13 children of Andrew Gove and Mary Ann Strachan. She also does not have any reference to the 1841 census although she has the others.
-
Thank you for this information. I'll look at this tree.

Hi all ,
Well no Andrew but this could be the family in 1841 -
Johnshaven Benholm Kincardineshire
Mary GOW 25
Jessie GOW 3
Alexander GOW 1
http://www.freecen.org.uk/ (Transcriptions)
All born Kincardineshire , it would match up with the IGI births for the children

Oh.. wonderful. Thank you.
This is certainly a very favourable lead because the area is the right one.
Now - next question, where's Andrew??
