I have been trying to find any information of the coulton ( could be spelt a different way or even coulson) family in new zealand . very little information to go one .
Bert coulton was apparently a jockey over there if so he would be registered as one but i can,t find anything his mothers name was annie and he has sisters by the name of doreen, josephine who i believe went into a convent and had the church name of Mary but was believed to have left the convent then married. Wellington and auckland are the only other names mentioned .

Welcome to Rootschat. This isn't a forum for tracing living relatives so we can't post details of anyone who might still be alive. If these people are deceased it would make it easier for us to help if you could give us an indication of dates.
-
Thanks for your quick reply .. yes a couple of them will be deceased now but i am afraid i have no other details on them . i just thought the names might ring some bells with someone .

Hello,
One newspaper report that is not helpful but it does refer to Bert Coulton
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=EP19071025.2.104.2&srpos=1&e=-------10--1----2bert+coulton--
may help with a geographic area in which to search
several coultons in the bdm but none that really match

Hi
Have been through my Turf Registers:
1900-1919 no index of Jockeys, his names does not shown as a rider on the important race winners.
1920 -1929 his name does not appear on the Jockey Index.
1930-1939 : : : : : : leading Jockeys
I did not go through all the race pages in the books looking for him, not knowing where he was living or what stable he may been attach to.
Any idea what horses he may have ridden, can look horses up in the racing index of the Turf Registers.
Regards
Kiwi-terrier

Good morning
Thanks for trying to find bert , it looks like i have been given wrong information about him being a jocket otherwise he would of been on a register .The only places we remember was Wellington and auckland .
I will have to now try and go throught the root of Josephine who was in a convent then left and married .
A huge thank you fro all your help
Edie .

Searching the NZ Papers Past a Coulton was mentioned in connection to horse racing perhaps as an owner and not a jockey.

Robyn

Here is a reference to Bert Coulton in 1910
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0dhe/
-
many thanks for all the help x
-
He may have been a Jockey and ridden any winners
The Turf Register for that era are small and only had the 1st three home in there races. I did not go through them as there is about 200 pages in each book.
If area known it makes it a bit easier to look.

Thanks for contacting me again. I am sorry the only names we can recall was the area we think they lived and they were Wellington and I think Halifax. Someone told me it was possible he was an owner not a jockey X

Hello Edie
Aah ... it seems the family name was CAULTON (rather than COULTON). :) And so I now have rather a lot of info to add for this family.
I'll begin with Josephine, (Josephine Ellen CAULTON - Sister Denis), who actually remained a much-loved and respected member of the Sisters of Compassion and died in Wellington on 29 December last, aged 84 years. She was born at Pokeno (South of Auckland) on 2 December 1926, the daughter of Annie and Bert CAULTON.
You can view Josephine's obituary (with photo) at the following link (which may take a few minutes to download.)
http://tinyurl.com/2abwnqn
~ Lu see next >>
-
Additionally there is a family notice for Sister Josephine, which you'll find at >>
http://lychgate.co.nz/obituary.aspx?id=395
Much has been written about Josephine's life - and it is perhaps more easily accessed by just doing a Google search.
Use the search terms -- "Sister Josephine CAULTON + New Zealand" ... and "Josephine CAULTON + New Zealand" :
Sister Josephine was buried at the Karori cemetery in Wellington in early January 2011. [The cemetery database doesn't actually return a result when you search on surname, but details are available via a "google" search.]
I haven't been able to find mention of a "Bert CAULTON" involved in horse racing, but as you'll see (next), there were two persons of the name "Bertie CAULTON" :

-
Josephine Ellen CAULTON and her siblings were the children of Annie and Bert CAULTON.
Her father ("Bert"), as is mentioned in the obituary, died when Josephine was aged 4 and half. (Year given incorrectly as 1933 ... it should have read 1931) :
His union with Annie, was in fact his second marriage (more of that in a moment).

Mabel Adelaide Elliott TYSON
NZ Births
1901 - Ellen* Lucia CAULTON (*Helen)
1904 - Bertie William Albert CAULTON
1906 - Frederick Thomas CAULTON
[Appears to have died in 1907 - aged 13 months]
Parents: Mabel Adelaide & Bertie Harry Howden CAULTON
So, the child "Bertie William Albert" was issue of the first marriage and therefore a half-brother of Josephine and her siblings.
It appears this (first) marriage ended in divorce (record not showing on Archives website - but probably processed through Wellington Court. The couple resided in Wellington.)
There is a marriage of a "Mabel Adelaide TYSON" to Herbert Arthur FLOWERS in 1912 with birth and death records for this lady suggesting she was the former "Mrs CAULTON".

Not sure which "Bertie" CAULTON you were searching for ?
Just adding though the wife of Bertie William Albert had the maiden name of WILLIS (if that is of help to you).

Hi again Edie
There is also a WW1 Army record available for Bertie CAULTON at Archives NZ (Wellington office).
http://archway.archives.govt.nz/
CAULTON - Bertie - WW1 2/854
[This is Bertie Harry Howden CAULTON. From another source, it shows he named his sister "Mrs. J. WALKER" as next-of-kin. "Mrs WALKER" was Ethel Maud CAULTON m. 1909 to Joseph WALKER.]
These Army files are, (on request to Archives NZ), converted to a digitised format and then made available for viewing (free), on the Archives website "Archway". The process takes up to two weeks or so.
[Won't bog you down with lots of details :D - but if you need further help, then please just ask.]

Hi Edie
Happy to have been able to help.
Funnily, I'd been catching up with some back issues of my local Wellington newspapers last weekend after having been away on holiday, and blow me down, there was an article about the Sisters of Compassion which featured the funeral photo of Sister Josephine CAULTON. How fortuitous was that ? :) The rest was relatively easy.
And what a wonderful and inspirational woman Josephine was. I thoroughly enjoyed reading all about her. :)

Hi this was a nice read about Bertie Caulton and his dauther's life was amazing.
Bertie's first wife Mabel Adelaide Tyson was my great great aunty. I thnk it was the younger Bert Coulton who spent time with horses too.
I believe Bert and Mabel did not have a happy marriage and divorced about 1912 with Mabel marrying Mr Flowers the same week she got her divoice in Welllngton.
Here is a website for findagrave; it has a picture of Mabel with the sad sorry of her divorce.
