Hi There,
I am looking for any help in researching My great Grandmother, Margaret Agnes Rose Glasgo.
I have very little information about her or her family. She first appears in my grandmothers Patricia Glasgo birth certificate, Details are: Patricia Glasgo born 17 March 1912 at Newton Vicarage Soberton. Father unknown, Mother Margaret Agnes Rose Glasgo, a domestic servant at Waltham House, Droxford (Droxford Union Workhouse).
The next time she appears is on her marriage certificate Details are: Margaret Agnes Rose Glasgo, age 28 years, Spinster, Occupation Nurse, married Charles Henry Poffley, Age 24 years, Bachelor, Occupation Railway Porter S.E.& C. Railway 26th March 1913 Dartford Registry office Kent.
Margaret does not appear in any census and i can find no trace of her.
Does anyone have any access to the Droxford union Workhouse Records, to see if she appears there, or could anyone find any thing from the Soberton Vicarage records please?
My grandmother Patricia was always was telling me that she thought her mother Margaret was Irish by birth if that helps too, and also on her marriage certificate, her Father was given as a Duncan Glasgo, rank or Profession: Sergt Major 2nd Kings Liverpool Regiment.
Hoping anyone can help
Michael

Peter Higginbothom's Workhouse website says of Droxford Workhouse:
Few records survive — holdings include Guardians' minute books (1835-1930); Ledgers (1836-1928); Letter books (1835-39).

Hi Michael,
She does not seem to appear on 1911 Census so may have been sent away from Ireland to have the Baby.
Is that you Tree on Anc with Photos of her?
If she was born c 1885 you will be able to find a Irish Birth Cert for her and purchase it.
Familysearch.Org has this;
Margaret GLASGOW
Birth, Reg District Belfast
Jan-Mar Qtr 1885
Film No 101060
Volume 1
Page 292
Digital Folder Number 4193461
Image Number 00393
Have you tried following up Duncans Regiment for more info on him?
Trish :)

So many probables.
Duncan sounds Scottish to me. Could have been born Scotland. Joined Regiment. Posted Ireland, Married, had Margaret etc etc.
Regiment could be Overseas between 1901-1912 etc ::)

No Duncan Glasgo/Glasgow in Scotland 1901 census.
No Margaret Glasgo ..........
BUT there are 24 Margaret Glasgow's in Scotland 1901 census. Of them only 5 are between the ages of 14 - 18.
-
I've checked back the census from 1881 to 1911 and there are no Duncan Glasgo/Glasgow listed in Scotland.

Thanks fifer :)

Just found a Duncan Glasgow born in Scotland in 1869 on SP.
-
This is him
DUNCAN MCKENZIE GLASGOW Male
Event(s): Birth: 30 MAR 1869 Irvine, Ayr, Scotland
Parents:
Father: WILLIAM GLASGOW
Mother: MARION MCKENZIE

I should add that there was a lot of Irish connections to the Ayrshire coast ie Stranraer to Larne ferry.
Can't find a Scottish marriage for Duncan sorry. :-\
-
if the regiment on the marraige cert is correct, the 2nd Kings were in India & Burma in the 1870s & 1880s. But, the first battalion were based at the Curragh from 1882 which could be the Irish connection.

The Irish civil registration index contains no entry for Duncan Glasgo/Glasgow- this covers all births, deaths and marriages for all of Ireland 1864-1921 and deaths for the Republic of Ireland up to 1958.
There's also no birth registration for a Margaret Agnes Rose Glasgo or a Margaret Glasgo born in Co. Kildare.

Hi All,
Many thanks for your continued input on the search for the "Lost" Glasgo clan. lol
I do have a tree on Ancestry with the basic information that i have told you all about on here also. I also have a few Pictures of Margaret.
Would a Scan of the Marriage Certificate help anyone? or a Scan Of Patricia's Birth Certificate? I could post on here, or provide a link to an external site maybe.
A long Shot, but would anyone be able to get to the Hampshire Records office and have a look at the surviving Droxford Union Workhouse Records? to see if there is any mention of Margaret at all?
The Kings Liverpool Regiment info for Duncan is a great idea, many thanks for that.
Please carry on with all your diligent work,
And Many thanks for all you have done so far.

Who were the witnesses to the marriage?
-
Hi Bearkat,
The Witness 's on the certificate were a Robert N Cooper and Charles Macrow and the wedding was at Dartford Registry office in Kent.
Regards,
Michael
-
Do you know if these could be family members?
-
Hi Again Bearkat and all,
Very interesting find, on the last question by Bearkat about the witnesses on the Marriage certificate.
I looked up the two Witnesses on the 1911 census, Charles Macrow was an inmate in the Dartford Union Workhouse, and Robert Cooper was a Patient at the Metropolitan Imbecile Asylum Darenth Near Dartford !?
Was it a common thing at the the turn of the century to have Witnesses to marriages perhaps taken from the "Useless and unemployed, or Sick" or maybe temporarily employed to act as witnesses?
Slightly off topic, i know. But raises a few questions perhaps on society at the time.
Regards,
Michael

You could choose anybody to witness your marriage, even someone off the street but I doubt that an imbecile would be considered suitable.
-
Does the marriage certificate give Margaret's address?
-
Hi Again,
The address on the certificate was Waterside Lodge, Bourne Road, Bexley, Kent
Regards,
Mike
-
Bexley Street directories are online. I've looked at 1911 & 1913 but I can't see Waterside Lodge. :-\

-
Hi Again Bearkat,
I do apologize, looking at the certificate under a magnifying lens, it is Warwick Lodge, not Waterside.
Silly me.
Sorry,
Michael
-
Don't worry, we all know how bad the handwriting of registrars can be ::)
In 1911 John Ernest BENN is living at this address.
It must have been a big house. If you do an internet search for the address you will find it had stables. I haven't been able to find much else though. :-\

The next time she appears is on her marriage certificate Details are: Margaret Agnes Rose Glasgo, age 28 years, Spinster, Occupation Nurse, married Charles Henry Poffley, Age 24 years, Bachelor, Occupation Railway Porter S.E.& C. Railway 26th March 1913 Dartford Registry office Kent.
How confident are you on the end digit '8' of Margaret's age at marriage? I see that in the FindMyPast index to the 1939 pre-war register Margaret L.A. POFFLEY's birth year is given as 1897 and Charles C. POFFLEY's 1889, both in the same household in Malling R.D. Kent. I've not 'unlocked' the household as there is a fee involved, but, if transcribed accurately, it seems they had a memory lapse on the details they provided at marriage!

Hi dee-jay,
Thanks for taking a look, here is the transcript of the 1939 record:
Margaret L A Poffley 28 Oct 1897 Female House Duties Unpaid Married 41 2
Charles C Poffley 16 May 1889 Male Barrack Labourer (R A S E) Married 41 1
The details i provided are from a marriage certificate, so yes there seems to be a bit of a discrepancy/untold truths (lying) there.
Also the transcription on the 1939 census record is also wrong, as in the original image that i just purchased, (i'm not sure if i can post it on here?) it says Margaret A Poffley. And the Date is wrong too, its actually 28th Oct 1887
