Hi
Have family who allegedly enlisted into the Royal Navy from Greenwich Hospital, This was the boarding school for sons of serving sailors at the time.
Can somebody point me in the direction of any links I can go on, to access the census records, :)
Also, how do I get the Royal Navy ship census records? were they only noted if they were actually in British waters at the time, or did they get included where ever they were across the globe?
Am trying to find any White's that may or may not belong to my tree.
All help gratefully appreciated
Carolyn :)

Census records are not specific to an institution - you will have to search alphabetically for your ancestors

Same answer as above. Royal Navy personnel were included in census records irrespective of where they were serving at the time.
Members of the Merchant Navy and other seafarers were only recorded if docked in a British port on census night

Ok, Will keep on looking through the piles of names, have yet to pick up any census results from Greenwich Hospital or Royal Navy Ship, but I will keep searching them out.
Thanks for replying

What dates are you concentrating on?
The National Archive at Kew has probably got something, try TNA web site.

Am looking at 1881 / 1891 census dates at the moment.
Thanks for reminding me of the National Archive web site, will give it a try.
Thanks for your advice and replying

Hi
The Greenwich Royal Hospital School (established in 1694) was for the children of naval seamen who were orphaned or impoverished. The school moved to Holbrook in Suffolk in 1933.
The records are held at The National Archives in (Admiralty series) ADM 72, ADM 73, ADM 161, ADM 163 and ADM 164

On the 1881 census the school was at reference RG11 727 and in 1891 RG12 515

Alas http://www.portcities.org.uk/london/server/show/ConNarrative.148/chapterId/3058/The-Royal-Hospital-for-Seamen-Greenwich-A-Refuge-for-All.html
Website has gone now (Nov 2022) alas, as my great grandfather Thomas Price Rose (1836-1893) attended in 1841 age 5 (seems younger that I thought they'd accept)

It's on the Wayback Machine (https://web.archive.org/web/20191218142123/http://www.portcities.org.uk/london/server/show/ConNarrative.148/chapterId/3058/The-Royal-Hospital-for-Seamen-Greenwich-A-Refuge-for-All.html). At a very brief glance I couldn't see any lists of names.

You can request a copy of his application papers (5 documents) from TNA ...

My post on another thread suggests what you might find in them ...

My wife's 4x great uncle was a pensioner at the hospital and I have quite a lot of images with lists of names, but I can't remember where they came from. I thought they were on FindMyPast or Ancestry, although I can't see any now. They have references such as ADM73/04 and dates from early 1800s.
Prior to finding them, I obtained some from https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/browse/r/h/C1782
see also https://threedecks.org/index.php?display_type=show_appointment&appointmentid=192
His son was admitted at the age of eight but to the school, rather than the hospital.
There are a lot of burial records from the hospital on Ancestry under England & Wales, Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial Registers, 1567-1936

P.S. I have now found the records on FindMyPast under British Royal Navy & Royal Marines Service and Pension Records, 1704-1919

Some ADM 73 records are also included (with other series) in Ancestry’s database UK, Naval Officer and Rating Service Records, 1802-1919.
However, David Boulding's query in this thread relates to the school. The pupils' admission papers are individually indexed by name in TNA Discovery (as referenced in reply #9 above), and copies can be ordered, but the images of these papers are not online.
There is also some useful background information on the history of the school by its late archivist, Bernard de Neumann here …
