Title: Greenland
Post by: JulesLK on Monday 04 July 11 19:50 BST (UK)
Hi

Wonder if someone can help me please?

In the 1891 census return it states that my Gt Gt Grandfather Bartholomew Sweeney was born circa 1848 in Greenland, Leitrim.  Unfortunately I can't find any reference to a Greenland !

Many thanks
Jules

I had a look at the 1891 census form for Bartholomew (Wakefield, Yorkshire - RG12 / Piece 3748 / Folio 117 / Page 30) and as far as I can see the place of birth reads 'Leitrim, Ireland' ... where's the mention of Greenland ?

There is a townland named 'Greenland' but it is in Antrim not Leitrim.

Townland: Greenland
Acres: 88
County: Antrim
Barony: Upper Glenarm
Civil parish: Larne
PLU: Larne
Province: Ulster

It maybe Greaglom, Drumkeerin, co. leitrim.
See Sweeney Clan site:  http://www.jmswd.com/sweeneyclan/looking/looking34.html.
Check on Bartley Sweeney.  Hope this is of help.

"Greenland" is the place shown on the Ancestry transcription, but in reality the original page only shows "Leitrim, Ireland".  I've posted the clip below.

Cheers

Thanks, Prue. That confirms what Shane found (reply #1). Unfortunately Jules hasn't been back online since starting the thread to see any replies.

For your information the first name "Bartholomew" was usually referred to as "Bartley" In everyday day contact rather than the larger name of "Bartholomew"

Hi Jules,
If as Ben suggests your area is GEAGLOM,Drumkeerin,Co.Leitrim there is a genealogy site for all of that North Leitrim area.
It is :Drumkeeranfolk[at]yahoogroups.com.
The Sweeney surname was fairly common in that area.
  Good Luck :   Maura

Looking at the pic of the census entry posted by Pru I am convinced that the 'Greenland' reference comes from the 'Ireland' mention immediately above the Leitrim entry.  If so it could be ignored.

And as for Sweeneys, Leitrim is full of them.
