Title: Grass family connection
Post by: pgh51 on Tuesday 12 July 11 05:17 BST (UK)
To the best of my family research, I believe that a Isabella Grass, born in Mundford on 24 Feb 1862 & married to a Thomas Hancock in Burslem, Staffordshire on 25 Feb 1883 may be my great grandparents.  Further research on the Grass family indicates links to West Toft & Branford areas.  I would appreciate any information to confirm that Isabella was a native of Norfolk & to hear from any descendants that are interested in the Grass/Hancock connection

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think that this Thomas is related as  the Thomas I have died on 14 Nov 1887 & the death cert states give his surname as Hancock

Hi,

I looked back on your previous posts, and see that Isabella married again, after Thomas's death - to a Matthew Riley, in 1889.

I expect you've seen both the 1891 census showing Isabella Riley, born Mundford, and the 1881, where she has been indexed as Isabella Grace, 19, born Mundford, a domestic servant living in Clapham.

Going back to 1871, she is with parents George and Charlotte, age 9, living at Santon Downham in Norfolk.

So it looks like you have the right Isabella - and here is an image of her baptism entry at Mundford - http://www.rootschat.com/links/0e9n/

Hope this helps.

Yorklass,

Thank you for that much needed information, it helps in concluding the relationship with both families.  As I will be visiting the UK next month I intend to visit Norfolk area in the hope of locating any descendants of the Grass family.  Again, my appreciation for the info.

Hi there,

My g. grandmother was Isabella Grass - I am descended from her second marriage to Matthew Riley.  Interested to find out how the Hancock branch arrived in Australia as I am also living here now. Hope the trip to Norfolk was productive. My dad used to visit his Aunt Lucy, Isabella's sister who lived in Thetford.

Hope we can get in touch,

G,day terry-Holland,

I'm very pleased to make contact with a descendent of my maternal side of the family.
Isabella is also my g/g mother who was married to Thomas Hancock on 25 Feb 1883 in Burslem.  When he died in 1887 she married Mathew Riley as you would probably know.  Their only child was George William Hancock, my g father, hence the connection,  Our family migrated to Whyalla in 1956 and since then we are scattered around all the states.
I live in the northern suburbs of Adelaide in Craigmore.
Would be very pleased to make further contact with you if you require any info on both the Hancock/Riley tribe.

Peter Hancock

My G/mother was Isabella Grass who married Thomas Hancock. Her parents was George Grass and Charlotte Whittle a widow by the name Charlotte Fuller.
As Rootschat do  not allow personal emails to be shown I'm not sure as to the convenient way contact you.

If Grassy makes 2 more posts (just say "Hello", "Thanks" or anything! ;D) they will then be able to use the Private Message (PM) system within RootsChat.

On the thread, underneath the poster's avatar, you will see a document icon.
This is green if they are currently online, white otherwise.

Click on that to take you into the PM system.

You can exchange email addresses there; or just chat.
You can't attach documents, though.
