Title: HYDE George - 1924 to Australia
Post by: Captain2 on Thursday 21 July 11 13:41 BST (UK)
I have been lucky enough to be given the following info for George Hyde (here on RC) and I wonder whether now I can progress any further with him and find out a little more about George and his life in Australia.

George originated from Reading, Berkshire b. 1898

What I know is that her emigrated from Smethwick, Birmingham in 1924, I do not know on what ship or when he arrived.  He travelled to Melbourne, Victoria.
He was still in the area in May 1928, I know this as I was very kindly sent a copy of a Newspaper article " Run Over By A Ganger's Truck - Rupanyup - Monday. George Hyde, a young Englishman was the victim of a serious accident. With a line repairer Gibbs, and two other railway employees"  The article continues with details and events, concluding with admitted to a private hospital.  His condition was serious, but now slightly improved. Tuesday 15th May 1928

I'm curious really as to what happened to George, and whether it is possible for me to find out...
Very many thanks

Hi

Do you have his parent/s names at all - many death indexes in Australia show these which are helpful in narrowing a search.

I see on Electoral ROlls

1931
George HYDE, railway employee, residing at the Dookie Hotel, Dookie, Vicotria.  No-one else with that surname is at the same address.

1936, 1937
George HYDE, railway employee, residing at Arcadia, (in the district of Shepparton)
Agnes May HYDE, home duties, at the same address

1942 both with same occupations, residing at Berriwillock, district of Sea Lake

1954 both at
Simmie St, Elmore, district of Shepparton.

1954 is the extent of my access.

You should be able to find most of those places on Googlemap.  They are all in country Victoria, and it seems he stayed with the railways - assuming it is the right person.

I see this death

1968 registered Victoria #10928
George Hyde, aged 70
Death Place:   Mooroopna, Victoria
Parents:   John Hyde, Louisa Phillips

It looks like George travelled on the Ormonde in 1924, ticketed to Melbourne.  You will find him on both these sites as G. HYDE:

http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/Scripts/PassengerSearch.asp
http://www.ancestorsonboard.com/

Note that the ship arrived at Fremantle on 14 Oct, and Melbourne on 20 October.  You can usually find some interesting stories about ship's voyages on Trove.

Very many thanks to you both Judith and Debra.  I'm amazed..  ;D

George's  parents were Alfred Edwin Hyde and Sarah Clements so no,  that is not his death registration in 1968, but thank you for finding it.  From what I have been told (through family) I believe it may be George as the chap working on the Railways.  The only info my grandmother, when she was alive, could remember about her elder brother came  from their mother and she vaguely recalled that he worked on the railways in 'Australia' !

I'm thrilled that you have come back with so much information for me to look through.. marvellous

You may already know this:

Victorian historical certificates can be downloaded for a fee of $AU17.50, (pay by credit card).  The certificate of the marriage given by Sue should give enough information for you to know whether this is the same chap.  You will need the registration number which she has given you.

http://www.bdm.vic.gov.au/CA2574F700805DE7/page/Family+history-Family+history+certificates?OpenDocument&1=60-Family+history~&2=30-Family+history+certificates~&3=~

I do not feel completely confident that we have the right chap, as there are some discrepancies in the information so far.

The fellow I have listed on the electoral rolls worked on the railways, living mostly in central country Victoria with the last entry (which is 1954 - I don't have access to later info on-line).  The death in 1968 shows place of death as Mooroopna, only 4km from Shepparton which seems co-incidental, and the dates match. However the parent names are not right which puts a spanner in the works so to speak!

Seems to me we have found a lot about a George HYDE who worked  on the railways and married Agnes May Campbell - unsure as to whether he is your George.

Angie,
I have not been able to see a conversation on Rootschat which gave you the information you say you have.

Perhaps I am not searching well.

In any case could you clarify what leads you to believe the son of ALBERT/ALFRED HYDE and SARAH CLEMENTS came to Australia.

Is it only because you have been given the information regarding a man of that name in Victoria?  Or is there something more to confirm your GEORGE immigrated?

Thank you everyone for your kind efforts. No Sue, there is not another post for George;  the information I have comes from members in the Chat-Room.
I have been collecting possiblities - in the hope that I may be able to confirm a probability one day  :)
Factually I have very little to work with other than.. George Hyde born 1898 Reading District, Berkshire. Parents Alfred Edwin Hyde and Sarah Clements. Emigrated to Australia ( where ?  - when ?) and worked on the Railways.  My grandmother  (born 1913) recalled that George left for Australia when she was 'young' he had already left home by the time she was born; so she never knew him, only of him.
I do appreciate that this is extremely vague, however the closest 'probability' so far is the travel in 1924, my grandmother would have been 10-11 years old.  I am extremely grateful for all the information that is being passed to me, my intention is to look through it all and eliminate the obvious 'not him' George's and maybe come up with the elusive 'I think it might be him!'  This venture has always been a case of" I wonder what happened to George " and to see how far I could go in finding out.
So, once again, many thanks to all for their time and efforts and for the links to the useful information which I hope will help with the search

Kind Regards

Angie

Did you know that his brother Edmund William died in Queensland in 1964?  Was there no contact there?

Wow ! I had absolutely no idea that Edmund had gone to Australia aswell... that is amazing. I am so pleased that I put up the post. I did wonder whether to or not as the information that I have is so vague. Edmund William Hyde was born 1897 Reading, Berkshire second eldest son ( 16 children altogether) Thank you for that.

Debra.. you are a star!  I had no idea that Alfred ( eldest brother) went as well .. oh my word... he was back in England by 1916  as he married in Henley, he died in 1932.  Drrr.. Poor Edmund.. discharged for being under-age.  He didn't go home tho', or if he did, he chose not to stay in England as he was back in Australia as quickly as he could be!   Alfred (snr) was (by all accounts) a nasty little man whom my Grandmother and her siblings despised.   The elder boys left home as quickly as they could, that is why she never knew them.  She was born in 1913,  it was their mother Sarah , and you will notice that only Sarah is given as next of kin, who they were nearest to, and it was she who passed on to my Grandmother the photos and news.  There were 16 children altogether.  My Gran and her sisters had to rise at 4am (aged 5) and bring in dairy cows for milking, so I expect she would have appreciated a brother or two at home !

And.. I have just found Edmund William Hyde's marriage - to Jane Elizabeth Wilson in 1930 in Queensland. .. This is such an excellent result, most especially as I had no idea that Edmund had even gone to Australia in the first place....

Oh Good!

We can be sure it is the right couple thanks to the Electoral Roll.

Cando has also found the engaged daughter with her parents.

Hi All ( anyone still interested in this post)

Captain2 (Angie) and I have had some personal correspondence as I am researching my Hyde family from Smethwick, Staffordshire (now a suburb of Birmingham).

We have come to the conclusion that two people named George Hyde and born around 1898 emigrated to Australia. There is Angie's George from Reading and my George son of John/Jonathan Hyde of 19 Park Hill Road, Smethwick. My George has a letter attached to his military documents requesting a copy of his discharge papers to be sent to him c/o Mr W Dent, Nhill, Victoria, Australia. This is the George who travelled out on the Ormonde in 1924.

I just thought I would post this as a follow up to the previous discussion and to alert future researchers about the two men of the same name.

Best wishes

Felix
