Title: 1841/1851 L/U Thanks to David I have my answers
Post by: MaryA on Monday 02 May 05 18:29 BST (UK)
Hi All,
I don't know if this request is possible - yes I do know the details on the 1841 census are sparse and my alternate favour is to ask whether anybody has access to the parish registers in Sutton for a birth look up.
My great x 2 grandparents both married ladies with the surname Lenton and I don’t know if they are related in any way.

James Larkins (b1817 Sutton to parents James and Ann) married Eliza Lenton (1819 Sutton-1893 Biggleswade) on 2nd September 1836 in Sutton.
On the IGI Eliza's parents are John Lenton and Ann. and there are also a number of other siblings including Isabel, Hezekiah, James, Charles and Priscilla.
An 1851 look up for James and Eliza Larkins with children William (b1839) Ann (b 1840) Thomas John (b1848), Eliza (b1850) and possibly Fanny Jane (b 1851) would be great.  Even better would be if they were found in 1841.  The first 3 children were born in Sutton but somewhere between 1848 and 1852 they had moved to Henlow.  Later they lived in Biggleswade.

Thomas Hillyard (b1826 Westering) (d1873 Luton) married Emma Lenton (b1829 Sutton) in 1849 Biggleswade.  They lived from 1861 onwards in Luton.  The eldest child that I’m aware of was Harriet, born in 1854.

I haven't found Emma on the IGI and only have her date of birth from censuses but as I have followed her through 5 censuses 1861 - 1901 I am convinced her dob would be 1828-1830.

It would be great to know who her parents were and I’m wondering if anybody could find Emma with parents, in the 1841 census probably in Sutton, or then again Biggleswade!  Another bonus obviously would be if anybody found Thomas and Emma in 1851 but of course that could be Sutton, Biggleswade or maybe even Luton.

Thanks so much for reading this.

Oh thank you David, and also an extra THREE children, how exciting, I thought there were some large gaps in between.  Hope I manage to trace forward the older children, they might be old enough to be out working ten years later, Martha I fear probably died young as she doesn't appear later.

Best wishes
Mary

That was easy - second entry in the village

1841 Sutton HO107/002 Folio 2B
John Lenton 45 publican
Ann Lenton 45
William Lenton 20
James Lenton 18
Hezicah Lenton 15
Charles Lenton 10
Emma Lenton 10
Julia Lenton 7
All born in Beds

No other Lentons in Sutton in 1841

James Larkins 24 blacksmith
Eliza Larkins 24
William Larkins 3
Ann Larkins 1
All born Beds
(a bit of a career move, blacksmith to draper!)
Next door was the Papworth family including Caroline 6.

OK, easy part done. Now for Emma 1851

David, this must be Christmas.  I can't thank you enough, yes its strange about the change in occupation, I wonder if the shop was more Eliza's concern than Thomas's, I don't have his death certificate but he died in his 40's, not so very old really, maybe he was too ill to do heavier work.  She continued on with the drapers in later years.

It does look like Eliza and Emma  were sisters, at first I thought there was too much of an age gap, but it seems that my great grandparents, Thomas John Larkins and Harriet Hillyard were cousins.

Best wishes, Mary

Burials
Isabel Lenton age 2+  2 Nov 1835 Sutton
John Lenton 50 1 June 1854 Bedford Asylum (might not be yours)

I've just had another look at Martha Larkins aged 1 - she was actually Martha P Larkins.

No sign of the Hillyards in either Sutton or Biggleswade, and I'm afraid that Luton is a bit of a tall order

Hope this has helped

David

Thank you once again for your help, I've noted the amendment to Martha and the details of Isabel's death.  The John isn't mine as I've found him and Ann later in 1861 still together.

I should be able to work out from later censuses whether Emma and Charles Lenton were actually twins although I believe the ages were rounded to the nearest five years in 1841  so probably they were near enough one year after the other and little Isabel fitting into the middle.

I've found 2 deaths registered Biggleswade for Martha, I think hers must have been 1852 as the other in 1856 was Martha Eliza.

I just telephoned my mother with this information and she's absolutely amazed that you have found out so much for us and sends her thanks also, at 87 years herself she's awaiting the 1911 census eagerly so that she can see her sister in it!

If there's ever any help I can reciprocate with from up here in Scouseland or later census look ups, please get in touch and I'll do what I can.

Thanks again
Mary

I think Emma and Charles were probably twins - ages were only rounded down to the nearest 5 below over the age of 15. Anyone 15 or under should have had the exact age quoted.

I have found him in 1861 and he would appear to be about 3 years older than Emma ....... unless he's fibbing, well would our ancestors do that? ha!

Seems to have done well for himself, living in Clifton and is a straw plait dealer employing 22 men.  His wife Martha was born in Everton, I did a double take when I saw that, but it seems you also have an Everton in Bedfordshire too.

You've given me a lot of work to do in putting all this lovely information and now I also have more branches to trace downwards too.  Wow my family is growing!

Best wishes

Your lot seem very mobile. My Coopers were in Henlow from the mid 1500s and that's where I was born!

Just happened to be going through Clifton 1851 looking for one of my names and came across your Lentons

Charles Lenton head marr 24 plait dealer b Sutton
Martha Lenton wife 22 b Everton

Everton is not much more than a hamlet, so why they should have  named a suburb of Liverpool after it I haven't got a clue!!

regards

David

Of course you are sure that OUR Everton was named after your hamlet are you?  I always thought our place was named after the toffees  :P

Thanks again for the additional information, that fills a gap as I found Charles in 1861 when checking his age against Emmas.  I just noticed that Emma is missing in 1851 and IF you are going through Sutton anytime and come across John (the publican) and Ann and family would you take a note.  Don't go to lots more trouble, you have been such an enormous help to me already, just if you saw them.

It's always amused me how they moved around too.  The Cains moved from Codicote in Herts (and maybe earlier from Bedford) and the Larkins from Bedford both into London where my grandparents met.  Then my dad moved down there from Liverpool where he met mum and brought her back to Liverpool.  Seems maybe I'm the stick in the mud as I've stayed in one place all my life.

Best wishes
Mary

No Lentons at all in Sutton in 1851 - that's why I wondered if the John who died in the asylum might have been yours. Where did you find them in 1861?

Whilst looking at Potton I found
Deep Dale, Potton
James Lenton head marr 28 victualler & pig dealer (I dread to think what he put in his beer) b Sutton
Ann Lenton wife 25 b Everton
James Lenton son 3 b Everton
Ann Lenton dau 2 b Potton

You can't get away from Evertonians can you?!

Regards

David

Ewwwww brings to mind the reason why I hate Bloody Mary's.

Sorry I should have double checked the home address before I mentioned Sutton and of course I never knew his birthplace just from the 1841.
Living in New Town, Biggleswade in 1861
John Lenton 70 Dealer & Publican Hunts Abbotsley
Ann 69 Bedford Sutton
Isabell Julia granddaughter 7 Biggleswade

Is there nothing you want looking up yourself on any of the censuses?  I'd love to be able to thank you by reciprocating in some way.

Best wishes
Mary
