Seeking information on James Chapple who married Mary Sandy C1818 and James Chapple who married Sarah Sandy C.1818. The families lived in Ashcott Somerset. C. 1899 Walter Chapple lived at a property called "The Lawns" and had a store and the Post office in Ashcott His nephew, Hugh Chapple I believe had the store up until C. 1930. Harriet Chapple , my great grandmother, and daughter of John and Mary Chapple, married Henry Josiah Harris in London in 1852 and they eventually came to Australia. Harriet's brother Isaac also came to Austraila as did some of James and Sarah Chapples children. Seeking birth, death and marriage details of family members in Ashcott. Also contact with any family members would be wonderful Hartay

Little hard to follow your post so i assume 1899 isn't connected to your query.
familysearch.org has marriage of James to Sarah in 1829,was he also married to Mary?
Freereg.org.uk has 3 James' born 1808 to 1818.
Have you looked at census?
-
Like you Warncoort I'm confused.
I've no luck with the dates listed.

If you restrict your post to what you are querying it is easier for helpers.
Where did you get the dates?
Have you used familysearch, census or freereg?

Hi there
There are some Chapple baptisms on this web site
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~colinsgenealogy/Udevsite/index.htm
The Lawns in Ashcott (if its still the same place) is now a residential car home. They have a web site with photo at
http://ashcottlawns.co.uk/
I used to work at Ashcott Post Office when I was a teenager and have a postcard of how it looked then. It was then run by Victor Cox who had been there many years, not sure if he took over from the Chapple family? me a private message with your e mail address if I can help you more.

Just in case anyone is interested in the family.

Bicker, Your information has been invaluable and added a lot to the "speculation " I had. also new information. I can't thank you enough. By 1899 that Mary Broom Chapple , according to the remnant of a letter we have, was married and living in Johannusburg. Colin Rayner's site was also very helpful. I can't believe how helpful the Rootschat site , and those who participate in it, has been. I still hope that a Chapple family member may be curious as to where their Chapple family members who came to Australia 1840-1860 ended up and may try and make contact. Hartay

I am very new to this site and was delighted to see your interested in the Chapple family. We have routes going back through the family for over 150 years and my husband's great great grandmother was Mary Chappel White.
You mention the postmaster, William Chappel, who was actually known in the village as Sandy and was well remebered by my parents and inlaws.
Back in 1935 my husband's grandparents had seperated and when grandfather died his relatives came to the house and took away a trunk full of papers. In the trunk are wills and other documents which I have been trawling through for many years. At present all my work is in storage as we have just moved house but I will endevour to contact you again when I locate it all.
You can reply to me on (*) Jenny.

*bump* I'm researching this family too. I know young James (listed here as a 5 year old) was the son of William Sandy CHAPPLE (Walter's elder brother) and Elizabeth BANCROFT, who married in Australia in 1864. William died young in 1867, and Elizabeth gave birth to another son a few months later who did not survive infancy. It seems Elizabeth went on to have another son out of wedlock in 1870. It's not quite clear how young James came to be in England without his mother in the 1871 census - did Walter (who was also in Australia when William died) take him back to England? Elizabeth reportedly ended up in the USA. Would be interesting to see any passenger lists confirming their movements around this period.
