Can anyone help? I am searching for Emma Maria Whatling - I have found her on the birth index March 1897- District Wangford Volume 4A Page 1005. there is also an entry for Elsie Emily Whatling with the same details - does this mean they are twins?
-
looks like it - the certificates which showed an actual TIME of Birth would prove it though.
Both on same page is more conclusive than adjacent pages - which can still be twins, depending on the circumstances.

I can see an Elsie Emily on the 1901 census with Mother Mary Ann Elizabeth (spelled Watling) in Ilketshall St Margaret. (Wangford)
Have you checked to see if Emma Maria died?
No, she can be seen in 1911, but now Elsie Emily is missing!

Welcome to rootschat :)
Not necessarily - my grandfathers birth registration had the same details as another birth with the same surname and reference, they were cousins born within a couple of days of each other but registered at the same time.

I have found Emma Maria in the 1911 census as a servant. But i'm trying to find who her parents were and as I found out that Elsie Emily was with her mother in 1901 I was just hoping they might be linked (twins) they were both born in Shipmeadow union which I believe was a workhouse so she could have been given up/adopted.

Do you have Emma's marriage certificate, if so does it give a name/occupation for her father
-
The only way to tell for sure would be to purchase the two certificates to see if the mother's details are the same.
The mother of Elsie Emily as given in the 1901 census, Ilketshall, St Margaret is Mary Ann Elizabeth Watling. She is single and a charwoman and it says feeble minded. :o She also has a 19 year old son.
The strange thing is there is no sign of Emma Maria in 1901 and as far as I can see no sign of Elsie Emily in 1911, using the free search she is not with her mother. The Emma in 1911 was born in Ilketshall, St Margaret. It's almost as if they are one and the same person. ;D

Thanks Jan,
Yes I think that's the only way of being 100% sure.
You do start to wonder about them being the same ???
