My grandfathers oldest brother, Hans, born in Skaanevik, Norway 13th of August 1861 became a seaman as a young boy. He settled in South Shields, where he married an english woman, they got five children. He came never back to Norway, but sent some postcards with his picture. I don't know when he married and when he died, or who his children was or when they were born. I should very well like to know. His daughters name might be Leslie, married to Stan.
Probable he used Hansen as his last name, but it might have been Bauge, from his birth place, or Boyd.
You can see Hans to the left in the picture, the others are probably his sons and daughters or sons and daughter in law.

Welcome to Rootschat, Jaba.
I've been struggling to find a Hans Hansen or Bauge or Boyd with a family in South Shields but there was a Charles Henry Hansen who married a Mary Walls in South Shields in 1891. Mary already had a daughter Henrietta Walls born 1887. Charles and Mary had a number of children including a daughter Hetty born 1893 and I wondered if that might be the "Hatter" or is it "Hatten" written on the photograph.
Do you have any more information? An address in South Shields perhaps?

Have you any idea when he settled in South Shields ,there are a lot of Hansons/Hansens,
so where to start,
Hans Christian Hansen, married South Shields September 1884,

Thank you for the answer. First I thought no - but when you mentioned Hetty I remembered what was written behind another picture showing two young men. Translated to english the text says: My boy 14 years old and Hettyman and her child".
There is also written an adress that I read as something like this: "Mrs Garrer (Yarrer) 269 Saylor S High Shields As Cope". I've sent a letter to this adress, but it came back saying the adress dont't exist.
Hatter could be a name. But could also be "datter" - which is the norwegian word for daughter?

269 Taylor Street is the address of the family I mentioned in the 1911 census.

Hans fathers name is Hans Hansson Mortveit. I know for shure that Hans lived in Norway in 1876, but I guess he went to sea short time after. A marriage in 1884 could seame to fit very well.
Leslie, that could be a nicknam for Elisabeth, can also be read as Leppie, or something like that. Leslie and Stan seams to have a daughter called Betty.
And this I belive, is all I know from the pictures.

269 Taylor Street is also given as the address for a Norman Hansen who joined the army during the First World War (and was later discharged when a birth certificate was produced proving hime to be under age). Mother's name Mary Hills Hansen, 269 Taylor Street

Yes it probably is but Rootschat policy is not to publish details of people who may be still living.
I can see birth registrations for 4 possible children of Frederick Farrer and Hetty and will send you a PM about that

Back to one of the other clues:
Elizabeth Frances Hansen was born South Shields 1903. Was this Betty?
An Elizabeth F Hansen married Stanley Sandy in Droxford, Hampshire in 1926.
In late 1926 a Leslie Sandy was born in South Shields, mother's maiden name Hanson. (Per a submitted tree on Ancestry, this Leslie Sandy died in New South Wales in 2004)

Thank you both for all help. All the information seen in the connection has convinced me that Charles Henry Hansen is the Hans Hansen I have been looking for so long; his age when married, (28/29), the groom's fathers name, their five children, their address in 269 Taylor Street and the Hetty- and Farrer navn from the picture, and the Betty-Leslie-Stan-connection. It cant be coincidenses. Still I wonder why he changed his first name, and why his name was struck trough in the 1911-census. He must have lived than, if his sons born 1899-1901 was about 20 on the picture. And are there not any cemetary register or something that can tell us when he died?
Jaba - grateful in Norway

There is a death registration for Charles H Hanson aged 81 in South Shields in the quarter ended December 1942 (vol 10a page 677) - that could be him.
The reason for his line of entries being struck from the 1911 census could be that he was at sea on census night and the enumerator or one of the family had realised the error.

Hi there
Just to let you know that my Grandma was called Hetty Routledge and was born in Middlesbrough in 1884. I have researched the Routledges and found no other Hetty in a few hundred years. I can only presume it was the craze in that area at that time. If it was a Scandinavian name it was probably because of the docks. I presume that my GGGrandad heard it around Middlesbrough at that time and decided to call his youngest daughter that name. We have never had any Hetties before or after and I have done resarch since 2007 back until 1550. Here endeth my line lol.

Hettie could also be a nickname for Henrietta, Esther or Mehitable that evolved into a regular name similar to Nancy and Ann, Tillie and Matilda and many others.

Hetty Cary (1836-1892), a noted beauty of the Confederacy and one of the makers of the Confederate battle flag

Hi, you were asking why your Hans Hansen was known by the name Charles Henry. My great grandfather was also a sailor from Norway who sailed to England and married in Newcastle. He was Hans Kristian Hansen but was named on all censuses and paperwork here as Christopher Hansen. He came over here in the 1890's but don't know too much about him.

So I understand that the change of name does not indicate that I got the wrong man. I thought so. Many of the other information fit very well with all I know from before. It was very exciting to try this way. I'm allmost there now....

I agree with you that rootschat is the 'BEST'. The chatters here are so very helpful and are a treacure chest of information. I have learned so much about the area that I was born and even sent info to my 80 year old uncle who is also amazed at the help we have had.

I have a great great aunt named Hetty only her baptised name was Bernhardina, she was Swedish. I don't know what she was called in Sweden but my grandfather always refered to her as Aunt Hetty/Hettie. I would have probably called her Bernie but that was her brother's nickname.
