The last census detail I have is RRG11/5492/14/21 showing Thomas (my ancestor) and his Father Edward and Mother Jane. On their wedding certificate Edward gave his Father's name as Thomas and the 1891 cenus shows Thomas living with them. (4596/76/1). I am looking for a birth for Edward or a census entry for Thomas. There is an entry which looks likely RG09/4253/99/30 which has what seems to be the right Edward but in a family where Edward is the Head. My surmise is that Thomas died around or before Edward's birth and he was brought up by this family. I know that often the niceties of Stepson/adopted were not shown in the census details particularly at this time but does anyone have any idea how I can prove this?
TIA

Hi and Welcome :)
On the 1861 census there is an Edward, aged 6, with father Thomas living with grandparents in Pulverbach. Edward is down as b.Pontesbury rather than Chirbury though.
RG09/1862/74/9
It's probably worth looking at.

Just noticed the 1891 ref that you refer to. The Thomas there is older than the one i found so will have another look :-\

Another 1861 one that you could consider
RG09/1842/43/12

I discarded that one since the birthplace is given as Norbury in Shropshire and all the other birthplaces have been in Wales - i didn't think someone could be that wrong|

Oh :) they can have a different place of birth on each census - that's what makes it more challenging ;D
However, the 1881 one that you posted has Edward b. Chirbury, Shropshire
I've also seen Church Stoke mentioned - which is half way between Norbury and Chirbury . I don't recall seeing many Montgomery place names in the refs.
Thomas, Edward's father, matches on my 1861 and your 1891

PS - no birth registrations for Edward on the North Wales BMD and Montgomeryshire is complete :-\

:)
As there was such a good match on my 1861 and your 1891 Thomas, I had another search ~
Marriage, Dec q, 1850, Clun, 18 87
Thomas Whittal and Eleanor Hotchkiss on same page.
Also on the 1851: HO107/1983/293/2

Hi
In fact 1901 was Worthen
1891 Chirbury
1881 Chirbury
1871 looks like him at 5621/12/12 which is where the Churchstoke reference comes from (at that time i think it ws in Montgomeryshire). It may be clutching at straws but he is working with a Jones - perhaps he had a sister? Do you not think Norbury is too far away They married at Welshpool Baptist Chapel and a Richard jones was a witness.

Following my last thread this could be them! RG09/4253/50/7

Your 1891 ref which I gather is correct family ~
Worthen, Reg District - Forden Sub District Chirbury

Jane, 35, b. Worthen
Thomas, 11, b. -do-
Ellen J, 8, b. -do-
Nathaniel, 6, b. -do-
Richard A, 4, b. -do-
Edward, 1, b. -do
Thomas, father, widower, 70 (b.c. 1821), general labourer, b. Churchstoke
Note son Thomas and daughter Ellen
My 1861 ref:
Adston, Norbury
Thos Whittall, 39 (b.c 1822), agricultural labourer, b. Church Stoke
Elenor, 33, b. Norbury

I think I shall have to go with this and thank you for your trouble. There appears to be only two Edward Whittalls of the right age so I'll order the certificates and see if anything ties up.
