My Great Great Grandfathers Harris family in the 1861 census have them living in 1 Gun Lane , Limehouse London and I couldn't find it with modern maps but I found it in some old maps and have realized it had been changed to Grenade St.
What I want to know is when did the name change and why?
if anyone can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Mr Bish

The name changed between the 1891 Census and the 1901 Census. The numbering of the houses stayed the same. Possibly the name was changed because there were so many Gun Streets, Lanes, etc. in the surrounding area.

I have relatives in Gun Lane also. Lockie's Topography of London says:
Gun-Lane, Limehouse, - at 23 Thre-colt-street, about twelve doors on the R. north from Rope-makers-fields, it extends to the Commercial-road.
If you put 23 Three Colt St in Google Maps, it's directly opposite St Anne's church.

In the 1895 Directory it is still Gun Lane. At 73 Three Colt Street.
-
In the 1899 Directory also it is still Gun Lane. At 73 Three Colt Street.

From newspaper mentions, it looks like the name changed around 1898 but it is still "Gun Lane Limehouse" in advertisements up to 1910.
