Title: Taylor/Cruickshank and Lumsden/Coutts in Aberdeenshire
Post by: Alan5 on Thursday 08 September 11 12:37 BST (UK)
Hello,

I am seeking contact with anyone with an interest in the Aberdeenshire families descending from:

Alexander TAYLOR (c1794-1848) and Mary CRUICKSHANK (c1801-1892) of the Tarves area,

or

James LUMSDEN (c1783-1863) and Jean COUTTS (c1788-1865) of the Skene area.

Thanks
Alan5

Hi Alan5

Welcome to RootsChat. This is a stretch & I don't know if it will help you.

There are Cruickshanks at Brotherfield Mill in the 1871 census (in the Skene area). How do I know? Well, my Bain gg grandfather & siblings are listed as living with them, though I've never been able to figure out why.

I thought perhaps it was a transcription error, until I also came across what I believe to be the 1906 transit record of the eldest brother of my g grandfather (one of the sons of one of the children living with the Cruickshanks in 1871) sailing to the US with another young man named ... you guessed it ... Cruickshank.

So I haven't figured out the ins-&-outs of the connections, but thought I'd post in the event it made some sense to you.

Hopefully, someone else will have something more specific for you.

Thanks RedMystic for your reply.

I am only just beginning to study this branch and have found some relevant headstone inscriptions and census data.

I know Mary Cruickshank (born c1801 in the Tarves/Fyvie area) is the wife of Alexander Taylor who were married c1823 probably in Tarves. Whilst I know many of her descendants I don't know her parents, siblings, etc and therefore I can't say whether there is a connection to the family you mentioned in the Skene area.

Thank you for your interest and good luck with your research.

Thanks for the info rosie17.

Is Hellen a Taylor or a Lumsden?

The tree I am doing comes from James Taylor and Barbara Lumsden, the children of the two couples mentioned.

Thanks Flattybasher9.

I had the burial details you provided but not the possible birth date of James Lumsden.  Based on census records I am pretty sure James was born in Kincardine O'Neil to parents Alexander Lumsden and Jean (probably Fife) which makes the birth look a good fit so thank you.

Thanks for the reply rosie17.

Based on census data and the IGI I had Helen born to Alexander Taylor and Mary Cruickshank christened 23/2/1837 in Tarves.  There doesn't appear to be a later birth of a 2nd Helen or perhaps Ellen that I can find.  Any thoughts or comments?

Hello Alan5

Alexander Taylor and Mary Cruickshank were my great great great grandparents; I'm descended from their daughter Margaret (b 1824).  I've attached a photo of Mary with her granddaughter Catherine (daughter of Mary's daughter Catherine) that was taken in the 1860s. The story passed down through the family is that the picture was taken to be sent to Catherine's uncle (James?) abroad. I've also attached a picture of their gravestone in Tarves.
I know a few odds and ends about other descendants of Mary and Alexander. The only famous-ish one (apart from us) that I know of is Alasdair Milne (descended from their daughter Susan), who was Director General of the BBC in the 1980s.
Happy to give you more if you want.

Thanks for your messages, Alan. The website doesn't seem to let me send personal messages yet.
Catherine (the little girl) was born around 1858 so unless she was much older than she looked in the picture it can't have been taken as late as 1874.
I exchanged e-mails a few years ago with a descendant of James T in New Zealand, so if your cousin's wife is interested I could try to put them in touch.
Regarding Milnes, the north east of Scotland is infested with them. The Milne connection that I mentioned is from Alexander & Mary's daughter Susan, who married a Mr Milne.
Best wishes from Scotland (Edinburgh).

Alan 5,   I am researching this Lumsden/Coutts line, as as it is my direct line of descent. They produced Mary Lumsden who came to Australia 1852. She died 1909 in Victoria Australia. Mary married David Fenton 1845 in Edinburgh, and arrived in Australia with three kids.   Are we on the same wavelength?. ???
