Title: Swansea Prison 1891
Post by: cardiff on Thursday 08 September 11 23:36 BST (UK)
Hi
Anyone know what census reference for Swansea prison I am assuming it was there in 1891?
looking for an inmate either name could be Lawrence Charles Meldola or Robert William Darian  goes by both names  a trial at Swansea in  October 1887 for horse stealing imprisoned for 12 months!
cheers cardiff ???
ps found following
Swansea Prison was opened in 1861 and is now HMP Swansea. Brecon Prison closed in November 1915 while Carmarthen Prison closed in March 1922. Both Swansea and Carmarthen had male and female prisoners.
info from glamorgan archives

If he was imprisoned for 12mths in Oct 1887 - he would have been released in Oct 1888 (or earlier), over 2yrs before the 1891 census

Hi Thanks KGarrad
Yes I have found that census , it was him I was looking for! I note Phoebe does not give she is married or widowed ashamed I expect!
Horse stealing I believe was a major crime, and on top of that he had two names, I wonder if she knew?
Thank you for  taking the time and making the effort
cheers cardiff ;)

It is more a case of stopping anyone else looking!

Do you have the elusive Lawrence on any records, apart from the marriage and trial?

Phoebe would have been in USA in 1881 (as birth of Florence shows) and I can't find her or the children in 1901?

Can't find Lawrence in any census! ???

Hi
Yes I have her in USA  all Phoebe's info.
No I don't have this man other than marriage  and trial info I don't have the actual marriage certificate,Phoebe went on to live or marry a Mr Leach and the children seems to have just changed their name to Leach.
Meldola has you can see had another name Robert William Darian I cannot find him under that name either. He may well have changed his name again? and left South Wales.
Thank you for looking its always nice if some one can find what you are looking for but its good when you know you are not the only one that cannot see him.
many thanks again
cheers cardiff  ;)
Ps the only other info I have just found is the son Fredrick  Thomas Meldola b 1886 brecon  change his name as I said , on AnXXXxty.com there is  a Fredrick Thomas Leach formerly Meldola family tree but do not have acccess to Anxxxxty.com :-\

The public tree on Anc***ry is no help!

Frederick Thomas Leach formerly Meldola, father Henry Leach, mother Phoebe Jane Hopkins Meldolar.

No parents for Phoebe, no other husbands!

There is also a private tree, but need to have a subscription, and then ask them nicely!

Hi
Thanks for that I feel I know more than them. I am helping a fellow rootchatter,  the  family still alive so personal messages are being used. So don't feel I can ask the private tree, may step on some toes :-\
Thanks KGarrad always good to get someone elses view point and help :)
cheers cardiff ;)

Know what I think?

Henry Leach was another alias for Lawrence Charles Meldola/Robert William Darian!

On 1911 census *

Marriages December qtr 1884
Brecknock district    vol 11b, page 172

Meldola, Lawrence Charles
Sheppard, Phoebe Jane

Hi,
I am the GGGrandaughter of Henry Leach & have a great deal of information on the family. Please contact me on (*) if you are still looking. It seems strange that he has come up a bit lately. I had someone contact me a week ago on the same topic.

regards,

Jo McDonald
