Hello from across the "Big Pond". I am looking for my gggrandfather, Able Stephenson whom I believe was born in Nottingham in 1848. I do know that he was married in Nottingham in 1870 to Jane Crossland. Both Able and Jane came to Fall River, Massachusetts before 1872 and worked in the woolen industries. Their daughter Anna (Annie) was born in Fall River in December 1872.
I am also looking for the ancestors of Jane Crossland.
THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP!
Sincerely,
Beverley

Yes I have seen the link at Familysearch.org- but I cant find Able's birth in England or his wife's. This Massachusetts Census notes that his both parents were born in England as well as Jane Crosslands- yet I cant find them anywhere. I believe Able and jane were married in Nottingham, England.
Thanks and thanks for looking around for me.

I have been to Nottinghamshire Archives today. I looked for baptisms and marriages in Nottinghamshire and I could only find
East Retford, Nottinghamshire: 8/4/1855 Jane daughter of William and Mary Crossland. William was a cutler (knife seller or sharpener) and they lived at Suttons Row.
I could not find his baptism or marriage. Could he have been non-conformist eg. Baptist, Methodist etc.?

Thank you so much for looking. I am not sure if this is the correct Jane b/c of her listed age in the US 1880 census in Massachusetts which would bring her d.o.b to 1850, not 1855. What do you think?

It doesn't look right to me. You have changed the spelling of Stephenson, is it v or ph? Let me know as I am going back next week and will have another look at the v spelling if that is the correct one. It may make a difference.

Hi Jane,
I have seen it spelled both ways...but this is the actual Census transaction from Fall River, MA. - so maybe this is correct. The government "officials" here in the USA were horrible spellers, though. So many names were totally changed at Ellis Island in the early 1900's b/c the transcriber couldn't spell the names!
Thanks again!

I bought 3 CDs today from the Nottingham Family History Society. They should have most records for baptisms and marriages 1533-1900 in Nottinghamshire as long as they are Anglican (Church of England). I couldn't find Able Stevenson (Stephenson) or Jane Crossland (Crosland) on either. Are they non conformist eg Methodist, Baptist etc,? The other alternative is another county. Have you tried a look up on the England general board? I do hate not finding an answer.

Beverley,
If your ancestor does indeed turn out to be Jane Crossland from Retford, she is a relative of mine (sister of my Great great grandfather). I have a fair amount of information on her, where she lived etc.
Kind Regards
Andrew Crossland
