Sussex Genealogy for Cossum
My name is GeneT, I am trying to make a positive connection to John Cossum (1756-1829) and Elizabeth Burgess (1755-1824)
My third great grand parents are Richard Cossum 1790-1857) and Caroline Foster (1796-1850). They are buried in the Cleveland Village Cemetery. Info taken from the tombstone and read by GeneT 2 Oct 1997 as follows: Richard Cossum, Died May 9 1857, aged 66 years 5 Mo. Tombstone is in fair shape and easily read. Caroline wife of Richard Cossum died November 19 1850, aged 54 years. Tombstone is next to Richard is in poor condition and is barely readable. Using tombstone info Richard would be possibly be born abt Nov/Dec 1790 as no days were given, same for Caroline as only the number of years was given., info from other Foster Genealogy states here birth date as 19 OCT 1796 Lenham, Kent, England. Not confirmed by me.
Very Possible for Richard.

Hi GeneT & welcome to RootsChat
You need to be a bit wary of 'trying to make a positive connection'
It can easily skew your thinking when you are looking at data. You only see what you want to see and not other possible alternatives.
If possible, try to investigate everything you can find relating to the people involved (and their families). If there is (or is not) a connection it should fall into place
Don't mean to lecture :) ::)

Seems to be quite a lot of sources for Cossum Hastings on the National Archive Site - for example:
Copy will of John Cossum of Hastings, gent HOP/43/1 4 May 1773
These documents are held at East Sussex Record Office
Contents:
Leaving real estate to his three daughters, Elizabeth, Winifred and Sarah Cossum and pecuniary bequests to his wife Anne, nephew Richard Cossum and daughter Ann Gilbert
Not sure this is the right Richard, of course...unless this John married twice...

Hi Linda, You are right about seeing what what seems to fit. I am trying not to do that and I can always use a good lecture to keep me on track.
