I have a Benjamin Sabberton according to the 1861 census born 1796 Ely Cambridgeshire.
However in the column "Relation to Head of Family" it appears to read son of Sir Rd Sabberton. I presume that the Rd is short for Richard ( he named his eldest son Richard)
The Census Reference is RG9/147 Folio 94 Page 32
I am looking for a baptism for Benjamin and for any details of his parents or siblings.

It also says Son of servant, and that he in 1861 was a widower. His occupation was Watch Maker.

I don't read 1861 as other than "Son of Sir Rd Sabberton"

Thank you Paco and Patrish for your input.
Patrish I cannot see what the 1841 census has to do with it. The Richard shown is Benjamin's son. In the 1861 census Benjamin has put he is " Son of S?? Rd Sabberton.
Paco I have looked at the image and cannot see how what is written equates to servant, if you look at the "e" in Saberton below it is not the same as the letter following "S" which I interpret as an "i"
I have all the census images relating to Benjamin who dies in 1862
Perhaps some other listers can look and give their views.

I think it says son of Sir Rd Sabberton too ;D

Patrish I cannot see what the 1841 census has to do with it.
I just thought it might be helpful to see the occupations and family but obviously you do not.
I will delete my post.

Yes, you are right. I was looking at the Household Transcription where it says Relation -Son of Servant, but that is just their interpretation of the original census document, and looks to be incorrect.

From The National Archives website

Will of Richard Saberton, Farmer of Wilburton in the Isle of Ely , Cambridgeshire 26 May 1812 PROB 11/1533
There are some other Cambridgeshire Sabertons on that link
Perhaps Benjamin just had a very good sense of humour ;D ;D

Thank you Rosie and Paco. At least the concensus is that it says "Son of Sir Rd Sabberton" Now all I need to find is a baptism for Benjamin to connect him to a Family. I will say I did not realise that Ely or the Isle of Ely covered so many places
The search goes on.
