Yes thats the family
Henry Beresford, Caroline and their first son John all born in Cornwall, then they move to Carmarthenshire, Wales and Catherine, Eliza, Mary and Emily are born. Finally arriving in Swansea where Matilda and Virginia are born.
To find Henrys wife Carolines maiden name I think I need to find their marriage.
Thanks for your interest Alan
-
One of the children's birth certs would give Caroline's maiden name.
There is quite a gap between John and Eliza - do you think John could have been from a previous marriage ???
It may be worth looking for John's baptism to check mother's name????
Do you have the family in 1841??
Was Henry definately b in Cornwall - hisp.o.b. is NK =not known in 1851???

There were two Carolines bap in Falmouth at about the right time : Caroline Jewell HUGO and Caroline Corder Williams
Fizzy
-
Can't find the family in 1841 there should be John aged 3 and his parents but have spent hours looking, no result
I just checked about Henrys place of birth and you are right there is nothing to say where he was born, don't know where I got that from, birth place is unknown, now i need to find his place of birth, any ideas?
I could go and get either of the 2 children born in Swansea birth certs tomorrow, that would have Carolines maiden name on it would it?
-
Just checked mary annes marriage cert and henry is James Henry on that, had enough today will have another look tomorrow thanks
-
I see that Eliza was named Eliza Catherine Hewtson Beresford. Was the Catherine Hewtson significant in some way. The two names seem to come from the north country.
Fizzy
-
this could be Henry in 1841
Wellington Row, Swansea HO107/1426/2 folio 37 pg 29
Henery Berresford 30 watchmaker
Thomas 10
James 9
all not born in county
There's a Thomas Beresford in Swansea in later census years whose place of birth varies, sometimes Swansea, twice Cornwall - Grampound or Camelford, once at sea but may mention Jersey (1851).
:-\
-
I bought Euginia s birth cert yesterday (She was Virginia on the census i had seen) Carolines Maiden name one cert is Bezroney tried searching that name but can't find anything as yet. Henry was just Henry on the cert not James Henry as his daughter Mary Ann had him on her marriage cert.

I think this may be your lady
09-Nov 1814 FALMOUTH
Caroline BOZZONE to Francis and Mary
Fizzy
-
1812 Plymouth St Andrew
Francis Bozzone married Mary Whitford.
Fizzy
-
Link to Grampound - mentioned as birthplace for John
1819 Mary Bozzoni had a child Eliza baptised in Creed which is the parish church for Grampound.
No father was mentioned so I wonder if Francis had died at this point.
If John was born there in 1838, Caroline could have been a single mum as someone has already suggested I think.
Fizzy
-
I think that I have found Caroline in 1841 !!!!!
Truro
William Whitford 50
Mary Buzzeney 40
Caroline Buzzeney 25
Ann Teague 19
John Youtson 3
Francis Bozzoni had married Mary Whitford and here they are with a William Whitford.
Also a three year old John, who perhaps they adopted when his mother died and is the John with Caroline in 1851 in Wales.
Fizzy
-
Three year old John
I think the Youtson in the 1841 census should be Hewtson :
1826 Creed James Hewtson (watchmaker St Austell) married Eliza Teague
Cant find what happened to them but there is an Ann Teague with Caroline in 1841, so perhaps she is Elizas sister or perhaps she had an illegitimate son John with her sisters husband ?
James Hewtson watchmaker. Was he linked somehow to Henry Beresford watchmaker.
Fizzy

that's a good spot, Fizzy!
I've been searching for Beresford bmds in South Wales and there's a John Hewson Beresford whose marriage is registered march qtr 1865 Carmarthen vol 11a pg 799. It looks like a daughter Caroline Ann is registered dec qtr that year, but dies the following sept qtr, followed by her mother in the next qtr. John Hewson Beresford remarries in Pontypridd registration district in sept qtr 1868.
1861 census has John as head of the house in Swansea & Caroline is enumerated as mother, & the daughters of Henry as sisters to head. RG9/4101 folio 57 pg 6
Caroline's death is registered Pontypridd in march qtr 1876. Matilda also has Hewson as her middle name on marriage
Matilda Hewson Berresford sept qtr 1874 Swansea vol 11a pg 890

1841 census Thomas Beresford
Says in some censuses that he was born Camelford
08-May 1831 Thomas Beresford O'Blandy HEWSTON to James and Eliza Lanteglos by Camelford.
Eliza seems to die in St Austell in 1835, so perhaps thats why the children were scattered to the winds by 1841 although James seems to remarry in 1835 in St Columb Major.

Great Work Fizzy. ;D
James HEWTSON = Eliza TEAGUE 17 Jun 1826 Creed
Sarah Bella HEWLSON was born 8 Jun 1827 and baptised 10 Nov 1828 parents James HEWLSON a clockmaker of Grampound and Eliza The daughter of Thomas and Jane TEAGUE baptised by Truro Bible Christian in the dwelling house of J TEAGUE Grampound

Sure did Fizzy (Fixed typo) and their name
Sarah Bella HUTSON was buried 23 May 1830 in Mylor. She was aged 3 residence Flushing.
Cheers Kris :)
-
Ah Now !!
1815 Mylor Richard Philip married Catherine Hewtson (widow).
I wonder if that was James' mother as his child died in Mylor/Flushing.
AND a Beresford child was named Eliza Catherine Hewtson Beresford.

Wow! a lot to take in, I am going to sit down later and try and make sense of all this looks really complicated, you guys are really good! and i appeciate the time you have put in. I will post later what I think it all means and maybe you will correct me if I have gone wrong

I think that I have found Caroline in 1841 !!!!!

Yes this does look like her, they like to change the way they spell their name don't they?
-
I dont think that it is THEY who change the spelling as they may well not know how to spell it themselves in the 1840s. I think the enumerators just write it as it sounds when people speak it in their broad accents.
BOZONNI (which is how the Francis/Mary marriage was recorded) and Buzzinney are actually quite alike in a Cornish drawl !!!!
Oh Yes Alan do sort out all the info we have thrown at you here PLEASE and we will see what you make of it when we read it back.
Fizzy
PS - it was a GOOD challenge LOL
-
Well I have Carolines Maiden even though I am not sure how it is spelt and the added bonus of her birth
Caroline Bezroney Birth
09-Nov 1814 FALMOUTH
Caroline BOZZONE to Francis and Mary
I don't have Henry or James Henrys birth but I suspect that it is a spelling issue and may never be solved but I now have a lot more info on the family and would like to thank all who showed interest and gave their time in helping me, Thank you

hi, stumbled on this web site by doing a random search via the internet.
The information from your initial question and subsequent assistance from members will almost definitely help me fill a few of the gaps, in my research.
I was drawing a blank until I read this.
Cheers
:) ;)

Let us know if you need anything else.
We are an obliging lot.

Thanks Fizzy, may call on your experience in future. I'd interested in AlanHughes findings as I'm a direct descendant of Thomas Beresford born 1831 and of course his father Henry (James) Beresford.
Yesterday, I was showing my Great Aunt (Thomas Beresford is her Great Grandfather) my research to date and she found it fascinating.
Thanks again
Regards Jimmy26

I think that we decided that the children with Henry Beresford in 1841 were HEWTSON children not Beresford
1831 Lanteglos by Camelford
Thomas Beresford O'Blandy HEWTSON to James and Eliza Hewtson.
Fizzy

Hello Fizzy,
Thanks for the clarity in your post. I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to family research.
I have a feeling that James Hewtson (Watch Maker) could also be Henry (James) Beresford (Watch Maker)?
What do you think?
Regards Jim
:)
-
WOW you have really asked a question now !!!!!!!!
Could James Hewtson and James Henry Beresford be the same person ????????? WOW didnt think of that one.
What do others who have been involved in this investigation think ?
Fizzy
-
I'd be interested in what others who have been investigating also think too?
When you look at it there were a few clues.
Can't wait to see what others think.
Jim
-
it crossed my mind, but the ages don't seem to tally.
1841 census has Hen(e)ry as rounded down to 30, so born 1806-1811.
His death notice in 1860, as per the Cambrian online index, gives his age as 50.
http://www.swansea.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=5673
1826 marriage has James as watchmaker, so no longer an apprentice, & no mention of him not being of full age - 21 & over.
:-\
-
He could have lied about his age.......
Fizzy
-
quite so...
::)
-
From your experience, are there other avenues that could be investigated?
I was thinking of:
eg
Possibly check out if James Hewtson's (Watch Maker) mother, is Catherine Hewtson (Widow)!
Verifying this by:
Checking out her maiden name from her former marriage details Prior to her marriage to <1815 Mylor - Richard Philip marriage to Catherine Hewtson (Widow)>.
Prehaps that might give a clue to the Names of:
Beresford/O'Blandy as these are given as the middle names of 1831 birth of Thomas "Beresford O'Blandy" Hewtson
What do you guys think? :-\
-
Already been looking at those two avenues Jimmy but no luck yet.
Fizzy
-
13-Jun 1835 Eliza buried St Austell
21-Nov 1836 James married Maria Chapman in St Columb Major.
He was still there in June 1840 - newspaper report in the "West Briton" about someone having stolen a watch from his shop in St Columb. Maria also mentioned as a witness.
Fizzy
-
Great investigative work Fizzy.
Did James Hewtson have anything to do with the stolen watch and had to slip his "moorings" to South Wales across the Bristol Channel with a disguised name (Henery Beresford 1841 Census with his sons Thomas, James)??????
Looks like the plot is thickening!!
This is only my imagination running away with itself!!!!!!
Great work though, interesting to find out if there are any records of James Hewtson after this event??
Jim

you may be able to get a copy of the article from the Cornwall Studies Library in Redruth
http://www.chycor.co.uk/general/red-lib/
-
No death.
1841 wife Maria seems to be living back with her family.
Lanteglos by Camelford. Pre 1836, occupier of Jetwalls House was one Henry Beresford Esq. He sold up in 1836 to go back to his estates in Waterford.
1831 we know the Hewtsons were in Camelford and named their son Thomas Beresford........was this because of Henry Beresford living there ?
The Beresfords also had estates in Pembrokeshire courtesy of the de la Poeur side of their family.
Something obviously happened late 1840/early 1841 for him to change his name to Henry Beresford and up scuttle to Swansea where he could get lost in the Beresfords there. This is also why in 1851 Henrys place of birth is recorded as not known.
????????oooeerrrrrrr

Osprey - the article can be read for free online at the archives of the West Briton - wont let me paste the address here.

Fizz, this is great work you have undertaken. I wonder what the original Poster (AlanHughes) thinks of it all!!!
Bet he didn't expect so much information coming out of his original question.
