Hello,
I'm looking for the marriage of George Thomas Stokes and Catherine Smith. They married in January 1868 in Grimsby Lincolnshire. Their marriage is not on IGI (new or old), FreeREG or Lincstothepast.
I'm trying to find out what Catherine's father's name is - (or indeed any other details about this marriage) - and then I'll know if this is a sister to my x2 Gt Grandmother.
Can anyone help please?

Hi Carmella
I'm not sure if anyone can do a look up for you unless they search church records.
I stand corrected if I am wrong.
Here are the details if you wish to order marriage cert from GRO
March qtr 1868 Caistor
vol 7a page 908
A poster in Ancestry has corrected their surname errors.
Perhaps they may have more info if you contact them?

The couple can be found in the 1871 census:
Reference RG10, Piece 3411, Folio 115, Page 20
7 Victoria Buildings, Grimsby
Stokes, George T Head M 28 Oil Mill Worker b Burlington, Yorkshire
Stokes, Catherine Wife F 23 b Hull, Yorkshire
Stokes, Harriett Daughter F 4 b Grimsby
Stokes, George T Son M 2 b Caistor
Does this tie-in with what you know about her?

Yes, thanks, I've tried Ancestry recently but never had a reply back unfortunately.
There was an Ann Walsham researching this family (possibly a descendant) some years ago but her email address no longer works...
And yes thanks, that is the correct census for the Stokes family - I've got those censuses.
I wondered if anyone has a marriages fiche (I have a Grimsby burials fiche if anyone wants an exchange lookup!)

Even though it's of no use in this case :( , you ought to be aware of this website http://mi.lincolnshiremarriages.org.uk/

hi Carmella,
George and Catherine are my great grandparents. I have found the Stokes very elusive.
the wedding was at the baptist chapel Great Grimsby.
Catherine was the daughter of John (c1809) and Harriet (c1816) and had siblings Robert, James, Mary and Elizabeth. Address 1851 1 Burnham's Place, Hull. This is just about the sum of my knowledge. Hope it helps identify Catherine. If you have more on the family, I'd be delighted to hear from you.

Hi!
Yes thank you very much! - that's the Catherine I was hoping for!
Catherine's older sister Elizabeth Smith (1845-1924) is my Gt Gt Grandmother.
Catherine is a witness to Elizabeth's marriage in 1862 Grimsby even though she
is only 14/15 years old.
Does Catherine's marriage in 1868 give John Smith's occupation? or does it say deceased?
I think Catherine's father John has links to Liverpool.
I have more information on all the Smiths you referred to in your message!
Would you like me to send this extra information via PM? Or exchange email addresses via PM?

Looks as though we have a connection. Let's exchange email addresses. I'm a total newcomer to social networking and would prefer email.
John was deceased at Catherine's marriage. Former employment given as mariner. Catherine aged 20, George aged 24.
In haste
