Title: Murdoch McKenzie
Post by: gumball on Friday 09 December 11 23:58 GMT (UK)
:) :) :) :)   I am searching for details of Murdoch McKenzie would married Elizabeth Morrison on 28th March, 1845, in Dornoch, Sutherland, Scotland.
I have only found two children from that marriage;  Mary McKenzie born 13th April, 1857 and Neil McKenzie born 6th May, 1859.
I'm sure there must have been more children born the previous twelve years.

Mary McKenzie married Frederick Ballard in 1882.

I would also like to trace Murdoch McKenzie ...  date of birth; place of birth etc.

Thank you for your assistance and Merry Christmas.

I haven't a clue whether this is the right couple - first 2 children b Sutherland and ages fit an 1845 marriage

1851 for Kiltearn  Ross & Cromarty

Murdoch McKenzie 27 b Kilmorak Ross - agric labourer
Eliza  28 b Dornoch
Loucia  5    ditto  (?? Louisa)
Robert   4 b Golspie Sutherland
Isabella  2 b Aberdeen
Kiltearn ED 2 Page  5 Line 11

No IGI entries for children to check Eliza's maiden name and I can't find them in 1861

Thank you for your reply.  This could be Murdoch and Elizabeth.
I have found Elizabeth Morrison born 15th November, 1822, Dornoch, Sutherland, Scotland,  father: Neil Morrison.
They have named one of their son's Neil 5th May, 1859 (after his grandfather?).

Still looking for Murdoch McKenzie born Kilmorak, Ross and Cromarty about 1823..

Problem - Murdoch McKenzie was a very popular name in Ross & Cromarty so there are many of them on the IGI born around the same time

A copy of his death cert will give his parents names but that presents a further problem.  Unless they can be found on a later census, how do you narrow down a possible death period?

I done alot of reading since my last post but still no luck.  As Murdoch was a Ag. Lab his could have moved around alot so could have died anywhere.

On one search engine I tried it came up with over 33,000 Murdoch McKenzies,  so I think I maybe looking for a "needle in a haystack".

I'll keep the Message active for another week just in case someone connects him through his wife,  Elizabeth Morrison.  :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

Hi

I'm a wee bit confused as you say that Murdo(ch) was a labourer but on Mary's marriage cert(St Giles, Edinburgh, 1882), he is listed as a joiner. Neither  Murdoch nor Elizabeth are listed as deceased at that time.

I then looked at the 1871 and found this family:

7 Tower Street, Duddington, Midlothian
684/1 5 15

Murdock Mckenzie, 45, joiner NB Railway, b. Urray, Rossshire
Elizabeth, w, 46, b. Dornoch, Sutherland
Robert, s, 24, porter, NB railway, b. -do-
Donald, s, 16, plumber boy railway, b. Govan
Mary, d, 13, b. -do-
Ann, d, 10, b. -do-
Murdock, s, 9, b. England
John Campbell, boarder, 22, painter NB Railway, b. Dornoch, Sutherland
William Laas ?, boarder, 21, joiner NB railway, b. Duddington
Robert A Downie, boarder, 23, painter NB Railway, b. England

So suggest that you look around Edinburgh for them. Although, as he worked on the North British, they might have moved again.

Urray, Ross -shire  is just to the north of Kilmorack which is in Invernessshire

Hi Gnu

Re: Murdoch's occupation

That 1851 entry I posted shows him as an agricultural labourer and I think Gumball was quoting from that entry rather than the marriage cert

The children in 1861 link with the 1851 entry so I think I have the right family.  Neal/Neil is the clincher in 1861

Hi Carole - I went off and investigated further - the 1851 ties up with the 1871 family.  Found this -

Murdoch Mackenzie died of TB (10 years)  13 January 1887 at the Royal Asylum, Morningside, Edinburgh (usual residence- Portobello). Aged 62. Married to Elizabeth Morrison.

Parents- Donald Mackenzie, Mason, deceased and Annie, m.s. Mackenzie, deceased.

Excellent - I can't find Elizabeth in 1881 at the moment so wonder if she died in Midlothian between 1871-1881

Don't see a death for Elizabeth in Midlothian - will look further afield.

The 1887 death cert has her still alive

Found a death in 1901, Elizabeth McKenzie, other name Morrison- Leith North, Midlothian - aged 73.

I put a wider age range in!

Will leave gumball to get that one!

Thank you, thank you - that's amazing.  I really thought I wouldn't find him or his parents.
I'll go forward now and get the Death Certificates.

Thanks again for all your help.
Merry Christmas and Happy 2012. ;) ;)
