Hi there
Im trying to trace a birth of a Douglas Kermode born 15/8/1911 in the Isle of Man. But where do I go to find these records.
Thanks Ali
-
This site may be able to help
http://manxbmd.com/
(NB the names are not in strict alphabetical order within each letter, and there are several indexes for different parts of the Island)
-
Thank you will have a look now :)
-
Was it definately Isle of Man Ali,nearest I can find is a birth in Manchester.
-
No we are not sure at all.
All we have on him is that he Married in Christchurch Hampshire in 1949 to a Patricia Ann Clayton B1931.
In 1960 they all went to Australia but must of come back as just found a death for Douglas in 1992 Bournemouth Dorset & also Patricia dies in Bournemouth in 1996
on the passenger list his date of birth is 15/8/1911 & Patricia is 9/4/1931
Ali :)

Hi Ali,I saw the death,Bournemouth. There is a birth of a Douglas Kermode July/Aug/Sept quarter Salford Manchester 1911.Perhaps he was born there and brought up on the Isle of Man.
-
Thanks for that I will check that out ;)

Hi
I have had a break through on Douglas Kermode B1911 he was born in Salford.
Dad is Robert Alfred Kermode B1874 Isle of Man Foxdale and mum is Annie Christian Caley B1876.
But I am now stuck on finding Roberts parents I have been in the 1881 census but with no Robert living in Foxdale Isle of man.
Can anybody help please. ;)
-
so, starting with the 1901 census, the happy couple are in the Salford area:
Reference RG13, Piece 3712, Folio 43, Page 49
3 Withington Street, Pendleton
Kermode, Robert A Head M 27 Tram Driver b Isle of Man
Kermode, Annie C Wife F 25 b Barrow, Lancashire
Caley, Ruth G Visitor F 19 b Isle of Man
And their marriage:
December qtr 1898
Salford district vol 8d, Page 34
Kermode, RobertAlfred
Caley, Annie Christian

Hi there
Yes I can see them in the 1911 & 1901 but cant seem to find Robert in the 1891 or 1881 census.
ali :)
-
I can see candidates for Robert, but none born/living in Foxdale?
Douglas or Lonan or Malew?
Buying his marriage certificate will get you his father's name.
-
Hi
I know you cant rely on Foxdale being right either as in other census it might change I will have a look to see if it still says foxdale in another census but failing that yes will have to get marriage cert

Just an idea Ali.On the 1891 there is a Douglas Kermode born 1873 in Douglas living with Margaret Archibald who is described as his mother. She is the head of the family.Could Robert have named his son Douglas as he himself was born there.
Actually no scrub that,Robert is in Salford 1901.This one is still in Douglas.
-
Ok will do :D
-
Looking for the Ruth Caley to see if their is a clue there.
-
Thanks for that what census year are you looking in
-
Ruth Gertrude Caley.Born Douglas 1883.She is with her family in Pendleton 1901 but I wonder if her family just listed her and she was in fact visiting Robert. She is in Douglas on the 1891.
-
Thanks for that ;)
-
It's the right one Ali,Robert's wife was her sister. ;)
Ruth's marriage to Frank Isles is available online.1903
-
That is cool so Ruth G Caley is Annie sister cool ;D
-
I see he was Robert.A.Kermode.There is a Robert A on the 1891 census Isle of Man.Birth date a bit out.Born Malew,he is in Rhoscolyn as a servant to John Kennaugh 69.
-
Thanks will look at that ;D
-
I can find a few Kermode families in Malew 1871.Two are elderly couples but with daughters of a child bearing age.Another is a John Kermode and wife Mary.By 1891 they are in the same place as Robert,Rhoscolyn,Foxdale to be precise.
-
Oh that sounds very good.
Thanks for that ;D
-
Your Robert is a puzzle Ali.There is a Robert A in Malew in 1881,aged 10 boarder with Watterson family. However I don't know if this might be a Robert Arthur.whose mother was a Watterson. It says born Malew however and I have seen Robert Arthur's birth and it is in neighbouring Arbory.
The only Robert I can find born 1874 is in Douglas 20th March to parents William and Margaret.
You need his marriage cert.
-
Don't know if you have this Ali,Annie in 1881.21 Bucks Rd Douglas.
Thomas Caley 32 stone mason born abt 1849 Jurby Isle of Man
Eliza 30 wife born Lonan Isle of Man
Annie Christian 5 born England (Barrow in Furness)
John Thomas 3 born Douglas I.O.M.
Ruth Gertrude 1 born Douglas I.O.M.
They are at the same address 1891 with the addition of Florence b.1883,Massey M b.1885 and Mano b.1890.
-
Thomas Caley christened 1st December 1848 Jurby.
Parents Daniel Caley and Mary Cleator.Married 8 Jan 1830 Ballaugh Isle of Man.
-
This would be Thomas aged 2 in Jurby 1851
Daniel Caley 45 b abt 1806 Ballaugh shepherd
Mary 40 wife b abt 1811 Jurby
Margaret 20 daughter b abt 1831 Jurby
Daniel 14 son b abt 1837 Jurby
Ann 12 Daughter b abt 1839 Jurby
Jane 10 daughter b abt 1841 Jurby
William 7 son b abt 1844 Jurby
John 4 son b abt 1847 Jurby
Thomas 2 son b abt 1849 Jurby
Daniel has moved up in the world by 1861 as he now farms 110 acres.Daughter Ann has married Robert Kelly and they live with Daniel and family.Son William is a shoemaker,a trade his father appears to take up as by 1881 Daniel aged 75 is living with his brother Thomas 77 and wife Ann 80 and is transcribed as a shoemaker.
Likely candidate for Mary Cleator is Mary Ann Cleator christened 11 June 1810 Jurby.Parents Thomas Cleator and Margaret Tear.
Daniel a bit more problematic.2 possibilities both born Ballaugh 1805.
One has parents John Caley and Margaret Boddaugh. The other has parents W.W.Caley and M.Gawne so only have the initials.
add on.Forget the Daniel living with his brother 1881,seems to be a wrong Daniel, you'll see as you read on.May as well leave the twists and turns in.
-
Got em,William Caley and Margaret Gawn or Gawne.Married 1795.Two other births for them, both Ballaugh,Mary 1796 and Thomas 1802.This looks good considering Daniel has an elder brother Thomas...........................until,another Thomas born Ballaugh 1804 who would be 77 in 1881 and marries an Anne Craine in 1829 in Ballaugh.Notice Daniel's brother's wife is an Anne, which still leaves us with a toss up ???
However just to complicate matters, the other Thomas also marries an Ann,Ann Grimshaw in Ballaugh 1827 ;D
-
Daniel Caley + Wm Caley are living together 41 + 51 unm bros Daniel shoemaker who are c/o of Margt Gawne
-
How old are the brothers on there Frances.
-
william 53 in 51 (fits with born 1798)dan 43 (not quite as bapt May 1805 )but in 41 wm 40 + dan 35
-
This must be the Daniel shoemaker living with his brother in 1881,so not our original Daniel the shepherd, father of Thomas Caley born 1848,who was married by 1830.
-
Thanks you every body
Will read through all this tomorrow as out today and put a tree together from info.
Thanks ;D
-
I would be really interested in seeing that tree when you have it and also to know your interest in this particular line of the family. It has already been well researched and I could possibly help you locate that researcher.
It's a bit scary that you have traced quite as much as you have :)
