Title: McLaren in Falkirk
Post by: blinder on Thursday 22 December 11 07:36 GMT (UK)
I am looking for information about the parents of Janet McLaren born in 1790, who married Edward Derby in Falkirk in 1816. I believe her parents may be John McLaren and Catherine Struthers, but have no other information about them. Does anyone have them on their tree?

Hello,

Went and checked the govt website at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Scotlandwide from 1855 when national registration started, until 1900 there is only one Janet Derby - other name McLaren death.

She dies on the 8th June 1858 at Bank Street, Falkirk aged 70.  Witness, husband - Edward Derby.  Parents of Janet:  Hugh Mclaren, 'Maltster' (deceased), and Janet McLaren (M.S. Smith).
(deceased).
A very good quality death entry.  If you pm me your e-mail address - I can forward the entry.
At work so shall log on later.
Regards,   Steve  :)

Just been on to Freecen and see a couple with the same name, on the '51 census but the ages are out.

It would appear the couple there are possibly 2 Edward Derbys who marry a Janet McLaren? and both live in Falkirk?  Hopefully someone can spot the couple/s on the '41 census?  On Janets death entry her Edwards occ. is gven as Labourer.

I know you're looking for information from further back, but this looks like the Banns/Marriage of Janet Junior.

17th August 1851 at Falkirk, Janet Derby & Andrew Lindsay
29th August 1851 at Denny, Janet Derby & Andrew Lindsay

Copies of the originals are available from Scotland's People but are unlikely to hold any further information apart (maybe) from Andrew Lindsay's occupation and a confirmation of who lived in which place.

Steve ..... Does it say on Janet Senior's DC where she's buried?

Found the death on an Edward DARBY

If this is the correct Edward, then he died in 1865, Falkirk Burgh, Stirlingshire. (No age listed.)

The search criteria I used was as follows:

Surname: "d*rby"; Surname Option: Wildcard; Forename: "edward"; Forename Option: Exact; Sex: "Male"; Year From: 1861; Year To: 1881; County: STIRLING;

Ha- a very good question Anne - regarding burial place.

It was the first thing that jumped out at me.   I've downloaded and viewed in excess of 1 probably nearer 2 thousand BMDs and it's the first time I've seen a burial place mentioned.

Janet McLaren was buried in the "Parish Churchyard, Falkirk,  as certified by ? Middlehurst, Undertaker".    (the ? is either a U, M, or W)

I think it was only between 1855 and 1860 the places of burial were included, so I thought maybe, just maybe I could find something in the Mitchell's pre-1855 MI Book for East Stirlingshire (Falkirk).

In theory, although it's called 'Pre-1855', I think as long as there was at least one death 'pre', then the others on the inscription were also incuded.

The Parish Churchyard was cleared in the early 1960's and only a few stones remain. The Mitchells copied a list which had been made by the Town Clerk of stones 'removed or otherwise out of sight', but there is only one McLaren amongst these and that was a Robert McLaren of Bainsford, died 1826 and his wife Margaret Shaw, died 1854. No Derbys at all.

As far as I'm aware, there are no existing Burial Records for the Parish Churchyard, so if she was buried in Common Ground .......  :-\

Thankyou for your help. All this information has been useful to me. Andrew Lindsay and Janet emigrated to South Australia with their family in 1865 and set up a foundry known as the Carron Iron Works, so I assume they had association with the iron industry of the same name at home. Am I right in thinking the issuing of banns in Falkirk and Denny suggests Andrew was from Denny and Janet from Falkirk?

Yes Bryan.

Andrew would have been from Denny as we know Janet was from Falkirk.
