Hi,
Happy New Year to everyone....
Looking for information on gravestones at Largo in respect of:
George Gilchrist and his wife, Christian Honeyman.
Christian died on 25 March 1855 in Wormwell, Largo. According to her death certificate she is buried in "The graveyard of Largo".
I'm hoping she is buried alongside her husband, who died before her (date unknown), and that a stone is still in place.
Does anyone have records/knowledge of this graveyard...?
Dougie.

Hi Dougie you asked "The graveyard of Largo".
at that year it would have been Largo Church Cemetery
there is no headstone for Gilchrist in this cemetery.
FFHpre deaths Cd has a George Gilchrist buried 24.11.1828
abode Largo Largo Law

Thanks Norrie,
I have two OPR's showing that death/burial and believe it could be my George Gilchrist. Wormwell, Largo was on the side of Largo Law.
I take it that there is no mention of his wife or other family members in the grave...?
Dougie.

My Grandfather was George Gilchrist born Holytown 1910, his father was also George unsure of dates for him but was married in Holytown on 16 July 1891. family names were John, David, Willam, Maggie (Margaret?), Anne, Elizabeth.
David Gilchrist 'Portioner Holytown' (unsure what exactly that means) died August 28th 1815 aged 69.
Would like to contact anyone who may be connected.

Hi Philip
A "portioner" owned a piece of land which had been part of a bigger piece. The bigger piece had been split and portioned among heirs.

Thanks, but how did one come to become a portioner and how did they loose the portion, was it just sold?
Thanks again

A person would either have purchased or inherited a piece of land and when he/she died his/her heirs, if there were more than one, would each inherit a portion of the piece of land. Therefore individual holdings got smaller and smaller.

Thanks, That probably that connect him to John Gilchrist the Laid of Muirhead who killed the giant of Shotts. Does anyone have more detail on John, I see one source one source does not attribute him to the act.
John Gilchrist I believe died on the battle of Flodden.
I am a probably a direct decendant of John. I would appreciate any information realting to John perhaps the land was given as a reward.
Thanks in advance

I have just joined RootsChat and found the post about George GILCHRIST. He and his wife Christian Honeyman are my 3rd great grandparents. Their son, David Gilchrist, married Mary SKINNER and moved to Canada in the 1830s. Are you descended from one of their children?

No sorry I don't think so.
