Title: Royal Irish Constabulary look up please
Post by: HeatherLynne on Monday 02 January 12 18:09 GMT (UK)
Hi, I wonder if some kind person would look on the rolls of the Royal Irish Constabulary for my relation William Henry ROOTS (b. 7.9.1894, d. 1983)?  I've another thread where this query started but originally I thought the family story of someone serving in the Irish Civil war related to his father.  It now appears more likely to be his son William Henry ROOTS who was the soldier.

I hope I've posted this in the right place - I couldn't find a specific board for look up requests.

Many thanks for reading
Heather

There's an index to RIC men on Ancestry which gives to the service number, also sometimes joining date, age etc. The service records were filmed by LDS and believe may be ordered through one of their libraries.

Several other locations have copies of these films.

I'm not sure if Auxillaries and Black and Tans are included...

I checked for William Henry Roots on the Ancestry RIC 1816 - 1921 database and nothing even close. However, they say that their database is a 'work in progress' and the complete index is available from an LDS Family History Centre, Microfilm - Ref:0852088-97-0856057-2069.
I don't know if you have access to the WW1 records that were referenced on your other thread, but on the letter from The Ministry of Pensions in 1919 I see the word 'Discharge' is crossed out each time and 'Trans' written in above - so certainly looks as if he stayed within the army. Possibly signed up to the RASC Reserves and was called up again ?
Interestingly, they also note that he is 20% disabled due to Malaria.

I have a copy of Jim Herlihy's book listing all RIC service numbers. I'll look Wm Roots up in it early next week.

Many thanks for your replies Shane, Adee and Elwyn!

Shane, I'm sorry I've not responded to your post before, I don't think I can have received a notification.  I shall have a look on Ancestry as you suggest  :)

Adee, yes I do have access to Ancestry and have looked again at his WW1 records.  Thanks for pointing out that 'Discharge' is replaced by 'Trans' each time - I'd not noticed that before.  The reference to malaria is interesting too, this man was my great uncle and I remember him from my childhood but was never aware that he had malaria.  I shall have to ask my father if he knew.    :)

Elwyn, that's very kind of you to check Jim Herlihy's book, I await your reply with anticipation  :)

Best wishes, Heather

Heather,

There’s only 1 William Roots listed in Jim Herlihy’s book. His service number was 82539 which was issued between 11.5.1921 and 31.8.1922 (the final batch of numbers).

Thank you for that Elwyn, the dates could fit for my William Roots.  Is there anywhere I can now look up his records using that service number?

As I understand it, the originals of the records are in TNA at Kew, a set of copies is also held in Dublin (In the National Library, I think), and the PSNI museum also has a set. They should look them out for you but according to their website there is a £25 fee. http://www.psni.police.uk/index/about-us/police_museum/museum_genealogy.htm

I wonder if there are any records for Spooner (from Kilmeague, Kildare)in the RIC records.  My ancestors are believed to have served during the 1800's.  Any info would be appreciated.

If you give me first names and some rough ages, I'll look up the service numbers.

You had to be 20 to join (19 if your father was also in the RIC), so I'll search for any that fit that. Should be able to do that on Wednesday.

RoryT,

I checked Jim Herlihy’s book on the RIC and also his book on the Dublin Metropolitan Police. Only 3 Spooners served with the RIC and none with the DMP. The 3 listed are:

Robert Spooner  service no 30678, issued Dec 1864 onwards
Thomas Spooner 60129 which was issued 1901/1902 (that might tie in with Thomas b 1877)
James Spooner 82258, issued 1921/22

Thanks very much for this.  I think you are on the money with Robert 1864
