Title: James Taylor - how can I be sure?
Post by: Beechers on Monday 09 January 12 09:34 GMT (UK)
that I have the right one?

I have a 2nd great grandfather called James Taylor who married a Sarah Ann Woods in Leicester in the December qtr of 1857.  Their second child George was my great grandfather.

I can find him in the Leicester St Mary census of 1861 and 1871, but then lose track of him.  As he is not on the 1881 census with Sarah I assume he died within that ten year period.  As I have no other christian names for him, I'm not sure how I can verify his actual date of death.

I also have nothing to back up the marriage either.

Does anybody have any ideas?

Many thanks, ???

Hello,

I don't understand what you mean re the marriage. Do you have Sarah Ann's maiden name from a child's birth certificate? If so it would be worth applying for that marriage certificate. It looks to have the reference:

December quarter 1857 Leicester vol 7a pg 418

There is a death for a James Taylor 44 yrs (born abt 1835) September quarter 1879 on Free BMD.
That looks very likely- the death certificate may help.

Many thanks Heywood.  I have assumed that Sarah Ann Woods is the correct person as Woods then became a family name which was passed down as a middle name to grandchildren.

I'll see where it get to with the marriage and death certificates.

In 1871 there is a visitor - Ann Wood 30 yrs born Barrow, Suffolk (as Sarah Ann).

1841 has a Woods family in Barrow, Suffolk with Sarah A 7 yrs and Ann 1 yr so it looks as though Ann is Sarah Ann's sister.

Thanks Heywood.  I too have Sarah coming from Barrow in Suffolk.

I must admit I'm struggling a bit with this branch of the family due to the names being relatively common and it being a part of the country I'm not familiar with.

I think I must be lucky in that the other side of my family were from villages and are easy to trace through Parish Records!

Any help is most gratefully received.

By 1851, Ann is a widow and there are other children. Sarah Ann has left home. Ann is a Pauper- living Burthorpe Green. There are 2 Joseph Woods deaths - 1847 and 1850.

1861 - Ann is a tailoress and has another son with her 9 yrs  :-\

She is still in Burthorpe Green and the children are all born Barrow so hopefully would not be difficult to trace.

Good luck
