I need some help trying to find out what happened to my GGmother's siblings.
My GGM was Amelia Newell, and she is listed in the Ireland census 1911 as aged 17yrs. Her parents were Francis and Maggie Newell. They all lived at 12 Aghyoghill, Greencastle,Co.Down, which is just outside of Kilkeel.
Siblings: Willie Newell 19yrs, Minnie 16yrs, Frank 13yrs, Lizzie 12yrs, Lottie 11yrs and Annie 8yrs.
(I would also like to find out what Maggie Newell's maiden name is.)
Amelia married William Henderson in 1913,in Rostrevor. There is an entry in the same Presbyterian Church of a Minnie Newell also marrying a William Henderson. Could this be Amelia's sister? There seems to have been a lot of Newells and Hendersons around Kilkeel area.
Thanks.

Link to 1911 census entry- 12 is merely the enumertor's number for the household, Aghyoghill is the townland and Greencastle to D.E.D.:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Greencastle/Aghyoghill/245014/
Different spelling for the townland in 1901-
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Greencastle/Aughoghill/1235751/
PRONI Will Extract- "Newell Francis of Aghyoghill Lisnacree county Down farmer died 3 August 1939 Probate Belfast 26 September to William Henderson and Robert Patterson farmers. Effects £1040." Actual Will available at PRONI might give information on children, etc.
Added- lots of Newells here-

(I would also like to find out what Maggie Newell's maiden name is.)
The marriage of Frank Newell and Margaret Hanna was registered in Kilkeel. Oct – Dec 1890 Volume 1, page 721.

Wow,what fast replies. Many thanks.
-
Hi,
The marriage took place on 23 Dec 1890 in Rostrevor Presbyterian Church.

I now know the following:
Frank Newell married Margaret Hanna 23 Dec. 1890 at Rostrevor Presbyterian Church.
Two of their daughters both married men named William Henderson.
-Catherine Amelia Newell married William Henderson in 1913, her sister Minnie also married a William Henderson. (Both married in Rostrevor Presbyterian Church).
-Charlotte 'Lottie' Newell married Richard Cecil Nicholson 2 Feb 1920.
I think Lizzie(Elizabeth) Newell may have married Robert James Patterson.(I have been informed there is a mention of Robert Patterson in her father's will Probate, but i have yet to obtain a copy of it)
I am wondering if my Annie Newell is the one who married John Coffey. He seems to be related to Robert Patterson.
No luck yet on finding out about Willie Newell or his brother Frank, but the search continues.
Thanks for everyones' advice.

Hi,
Feb 1905 Robert Patterson married Rose Newell but her father's name was George. I cannot see any of the others.

Annie Newell was the daughter of Frank Newell of Newell's cross on the Rostrevor side of town. It had a post office I think and was yellow washed with red window frames. Frank I think had been out to Australia and made his money there.
Her siblings are buried in a small plot down the road - ones that died in childhood that is. Annie did indeed marry John - who was deaf and she died in 85 I think. She was a funny woman - wicked sense of humour, a Newell trait. Her favourite brother was another Frank who died relatively young. He was married to Isobel Wilson who was my great aunt.
Greencastle is on the southern tip not far from Kilkeel.
I do remember many of the names you are enquiring about though most are well before my time. My grandmother's sister was married to Bob Patterson and lived on the Windmill road after he passed away.
I was told that Annie was really Suzanne - by as my poor old Granny was dead by this stage, I couldn't ask her.

-
Thank you Kingkerwell,
for your quick reply, John Newell ( another one ) and Robert Ferris, errm Her name is down as Ferries do you think that is just spellling error???
-
Hi,
Yes, I think that the name should be Ferris. That is how the Ulster Historical Foundation lists it.
Regards
-
It is only in fairly recent times that spelling of surnames in Ireland has become standardised so Ferries is likely just another version of Ferris, probably not a transcription error.

hi
l am Annie newels ( Suzanne may10 1903) granddaughter - my mother was Dorothea Coffey. l am looking for info on her mother ?Margaret newels who died in her early 50's from breast CA. l cannot find a birth date or death date marriage date is 1889 she was 20, census 1901 28, and census 1911 40. l have tried multiple options but l need to see her death certificate to see if there are any clues. l have seen several other death certificates from others newels at the time but l know that cancer was a shameful thing and so it may be that it was recorded as something else. also l have been told that ? Minnie too died early form similar s any info would be very welcome.

I've see various types of cancer listed on many Irish death certificates for the period. Usually only the primary cause is listed so if she died of something like pneumonia or heart failure it will be listed as the cause of death but it doesn't mean that anyone was trying to hide the fact that she also had cancer.
See here for details that will be listed on Irish death certificates-
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=433043.0
The online civil registration index only goes up to 1921 for Northern Ireland counties (which may be why you couldn't find Margaret Newll's death) but GRONI's new online database has later listings.
Here's one possibility-
Margaret Newell, age 54, died 13 Sept.1924 Kilkeel district

I just checked (doing free search without being logged in) and putting in Margaret Newell with year of death 1924 (and no other details) brings up 1 result and then you are given the option of signing in or purchasing the certificate.

hi it seems a long time since any of these posts were active but l am wanting to know a bit more about frank newell and if anyone has a description or even a photo of him?
