If anyone would like a challenge, the LEE family I’m trying to research in England and Australia is proving one. I have family living at St George in the East, Middlesex in 1871 .
RG10/540/57/8
James McKenea/McKENEA aged 56 born Ireland Labourer
Ann McKENEA wife aged 52 born Lancashire
Ann LEE married daug aged 27 born Wales
Alice McKENEA daug aged 15 born France
James LEE grandson aged 4 born St George in the East, Middlesex
Peter LEE grandson aged 2 born St George in the East, Middlesex
Elizabeth LEE aged 5 Months granddaughter St George in the East, Middlesex
I’ve found the marriage of daughter Ann to her husband John LEE in 1865 St. Lukes 1b/1192 Dec Qtr, and the births of children Peter and Elizabeth in 1868 and 1870 respectively in St George at the East.
Ann is married as Ann McKENNE.
I’ve been told that four brothers migrated to South Australia in the 1880s, and the next I found of any of the family is In Memoriam Notices on Trove newspapers for mother Ann HEWITT. The children’s names given were Peter, James, Frank, Florence (D I L), Mary ( D I L), loving daughters, Lizzie, Bertha, Connie, and Alice Lee, with the daughters and Frank being said to be of Broken Hill.
Following that I found the remarriage of the widowed Ann LEE in South Australia on 21st April 1892 to the widower Charles Thomas HEWITT in the Registry office, Adelaide. Ann’s father was given as James McANNA.
I know the history of Peter and Florence LEE so don’t need any help with that.
I’ve found the marriage of a Frank LEE to Mary A R LAKE in 1905, an Alice E LEE to Adam L CAIN in 1909 and a Bertha M A LEE in 1914 to William H C SMITH, all in Broken Hill.
However, I’m having trouble getting any further. I sought help on the Census board but no-one can find them after or before 1871.
I can’t find any definite births in England apart from those of Peter and Elizabeth. I can’t find births/deaths in Australia either. As for husband John, word of mouth and the marriage in 1865 is the only sight of him!
As to how and when the family arrived, that’s a mystery too.
So any help would be greatly appreciated. (I know …..LEE! ) ::) ::)

Hi Dee, Hows the wonderful Iluka?
Umm might your John Lee working as a "Pot Boy" servant to a William Knight b1832 and Wife Elizabeth b1833. John's age is given as 1843 in the 1861 census.
The Knight family run a Shellfishmongering business and a Ale Stone business.
The address of the business is given as 26 Charing Cross London Middlesex. John's Birthplace is given as St Georges in the East.
Neil :)

Thanks for that 1861 sighting of a John LEE, Neil.
It's certainly worth looking at and having on file.
Dee :)

Hi Dee
Would you like me to go through my Western Districts off line resources forNSW including 1903 and 1913 ERs and History For Bourke etc
Cheers Clunky JM
-
If you're brave enough to do that for LEE, JM, I'd appreciate it. :D
Dee......hot and bothered.......
-
Hi again, I have his family living at 49 Park street St Georges Hanover Square in 1851. His dad John is a Baker employing two men.
His dad b1811, mother Carolin b1812, sisters Emma b1833 and Elizabeth b1840 and brother Thomas b1844.
Neil :)
-
well err
Neil will confirm that I can be brave so I will turn the e reader off and get cracking ... expect some sightings that will be for wrong LEE faqmilies though but at least you have given me a smaller area with some years and some given names. You can imaagine how brave or foolhardy I am !
Cheers JM
-
It might help, JM, that I have just matched up the Broken Hill marriages of Frank, Bertha and Alice with births on FREEBMD, so they are definitely the right LEEs. :)
Bertha Margaret A LEE born Jun Qtr 1877 at St. Geo. East 1c/48
Births Mar 1874
Alice Elizabeth LEE born Mar Qtr 1874 at St. Geo. H. Sq. 1a/398
Births Dec 1872
Frank William LEE born Dec Qtr at St. Geo. East 1c/ 456
Neil, I'll look at that one too. :)
From the births I've just located I know the family were still in the UK in 1877.
Dee :)

JM adds the following proviso .... FOR ANYONE READING THIS THREAD on a speculative search, the information above does NOT indicate any AGE of these people, NOR any marital status, NOR does any street address have the actual HOUSE NUMBER, so it would be sensible to presume that NONE of these people are related to any other person mentioned in this particular post. Persons enrolled to vote on the 1903 rolls for NSW needed to be at least 21 years of age and British Subjects (either as natural born subjects or by naturalisation). Also, "dd" is shorthand for domestic duties, it does NOT indicate that the female was receiving a wage as a domestic servant, but it usually means the female was at home, and not gainfully employed elsewhere
Well, that’s the 1903 Broken Hill district for LEE, with one LAKE .... I will have a cuppa and look for the other surnames shortly. You are a good detective Dee, so enjoy the above ;)
Cheers, JM
-
Re James LEE at Milparinka, the Sands Country Dir for 1903 gives his occupation as Blacksmith...
Off to look for the other surnames CAIN, LAKE, SMITH (William H C) in and around BH ....
Cuppa was refreshing
Cheers, JM
-
Thanks JM......
The John William LEE in that lot needs to be kept in mind, not too sure about the others, though possibly James.......
No Frank though..... :-\
Following my probable confirmation of the Broken Hill marriages with the FreeBMD births, I've now found deaths in South Australia for Frank William LEE and his wife, and for Bertha Margaret Alice (LEE) SMITH and her husband.
Dee :)

But went sideways a bit and checked 1841 came up with a James McKenna b1816 living with a heap of other Irish Immigrants in Liverpool lancashire by the name of Kennelly (also spelt wrong) and a seven yo by the name of Ann McKenna he james is single I think so Ann possible sister. or Daughter by former wife.
Do you think is useful or not, I can try and pursue them into the next few census?

Thanks again, folks. :)
Where do I start?
Perhaps with the arrival of the LEE family that Merlin found. I'm particularly thrilled with that. With the names of the children it has to be the right family. :D
The oral history of the family says that just 4 LEE boys came to Australia, not the parents, but to me it is obvious that the oral history is way off, as is often the case.
From the list that Merlin has posted, there are three boys, Peter, James and Frederick. The question arises.....was Frederick actually Frank? Or was Frank missed off the list? The age suits Frank's birth year of 1872. And was Alice born 1874 just missed off the list too, I wonder? As the two list vary, itg seems quite likely that omissions occurred.
Another possibility for John is that he came out first. This happened with a couple of families in my history.
Thanks for the link to the story of the voyage and arrival too, Merlin. :D

Marriage for James LEE:
LEE James single age 24yrs m. FORD Florence Muriel single age 21yrs 25/12/1890
Place: Res of grooms parents Nailsworth
District: Ade; Book/Page: 165/1240
Groom's Father: John LEE
Bride's Father: John FORD
I saw that marriage, Merlin, but was unsure because of the "Groom's parents" and thinking that John didn't come out here. I also checked to see if Florence Muriel had died, because none of the "In Memorium" notices say James/Jim and Florence (or Muriel). :-\
I also saw the death of John in 1890 and wished it had had a little more information.
It does seem rather likely though. :D
Thanks for the Constance Mary Lee marriage etc.....that is all new to me. :D
Dee :)
-
Sue and JM......thanks for your posts too. Between you all I am starting to get more of an idea of this family that has been difficult to trace in the past.

Some more on Frank William LEE.....
Frank William LEE & Mary Ann Rusher LAKE had a son John G LEE in Broken Hill in 1907 and a daughter, Jean Elizabeth LEE, in Yatala in South Australia in 1912, so it seems they moved back to South Australia within a few years of being in Broken Hill.
But most interestingly, there are some quite interesting articles about Frank William LEE on Trove. It appears he was a Foreman baker, which could be the family link with the family Neil found......
Hi again, I have his family living at 49 Park street St Georges Hanover Square in 1851. His dad John is a Baker employing two men.
His dad b1811, mother Carolin b1812, sisters Emma b1833 and Elizabeth b1840 and brother Thomas b1844.

I have already given Constance Mary LEE's 1879 birth in my previous post - Reply #17
Frederick is Frank just an error in the newspaper report.
He is listed on the passenger list as FRANK which is held at the SRSA.
You can see them all on the index noted as arriving 1881 here except for *JOHN*!!!

Sorry Merlin......I missed Connie's birth! :-[
Thanks also for the clarification of Frederick/Frank.
I'm afraid I usually have trouble using the SRSA site.....pages take forever to load and more often than not time out. I only have extremely slow internet available to me.
I shall add that to my list of things to do if I ever get to go to State Records. :)
Dee :)

That's okay ;D
Yes, the SRSA is terrible at the best of times ::)
I will find the index notations & post them here for you later

The reason why you don't see any later notices from James/Jim LEE regards his mother is that he died in 1909 & his wife remarried:

Hi Boblee,
Welcome to RootsChat.
There are quite a few people researching "James Lee" was there a particular thread that you were wishing to reply to?
If you let me know a little more about your Lee family and which country the come from I might be able to find the right thread.
Regards
Sarah :)

Hello Boblee.
Welcome to Rootschat. :)
We have a bit of a difference with the marriage of James LEE to Florence Muriel FORD and his parentage....
As posted earlier in the thread by Merlin, according to the South Australian Marriages Index, the following are the details for James LEE who married Florence Muriel FORD.....
James LEE aged 24 and single married Florence Muriel FORD aged 21 and single on 25th December 1890 at the residence of the groom’s parents, Nailsworth, SA.
Fathers = John LEE & John FORD
Ref = Ade 165/1240
The above mentioned James LEE with age of 24 would have been born about 1866.
There are two James LEE Marriages with father William LEE…..one was James LEE who married Mary Jane KILDERRY in 1889 in Adelaide and the other Joseph James LEE who married Esther SQUIRES in 1893 in Encounter Bay, SA.
Are you able to tell us the basis of your information about the marriage of James LEE and Florence Muriel FORD?
Dee :)

I stand Corrected, and apologies for having the wrong James Lee.
He is a big blank in the family, nobody ever spoke of him.
What I really need is where his parents came from and their family.

Dee has given you a lot of information about James b.1866 in her initial post. This is possibly James parent's marriage mentioned by Dee. I do hope you found the information I posted also useful. You appear to be a descendant of Leonard Walter LEE.

That's the marriage I found, Cando. Unfortunately, I haven't found it in more detail in other online records, so it may mean that a marriage certificate needs to be purchased to find out who John's parents were.
There are just so many by the name of John Lee. :-\

Hello again, Dee & Cando,
Yes I am the youngest son of L.W. LEE
Dad was a baker before he went away to WW1 at the age of 19yrs.
We thought that maybe his father was a baker (he never said)
I will go and get a Birth Certificate henceforth and give you the information it will take at least a fortnight
to 3weeks.

Boblee, to find out who John Lee's father was you need the UK marriage certificate, not the birth certificate.
Cando posted the details needed for ordering that in message #47.

:)I am a newbie and not techno savvy so here goes! I happened upon The Lee Puzzle chat and was amazed to find info on my LEE ancestor Ann LEE. I know lots about how shE came to Australia in 1881 on the Star of India - arrived March 1881. She was accompanied by her children - James, Peter, Elizabeth Ann (my great, great grandmother), Frank, Bertha, and Constance Mary. I have not been able to find out when John LEE Ann's husband died or they were divorced. Ann had a child Charles Henry William Christopher TATHAM to a Charles TATHAM in 1882. She had a daughter to the same man in 1884. she was Alice TATHAM (her birth was registered in that name as well as Alice Tatham KENNA). In 1921 my grandmother was married at the home of George MCKAY, husband of Alice. James was married at the home of parents at Nailsworth. In 1892 Ann LEE married a Thomas Henry HEWITT.

Hello catsrule, and welcome to RootsChat :)
I think the thread you're referring to is this one:

Dee, who started that discussion, is still active on RootsChat. I'll ask a moderator to move your post to Dee's thread, and I'll also send her a message so she knows you're joining in.

Hello Catsrule, and welcome to RootsChat. :)
At the time of the thread I posted about the Lee family I was helping an elderly neighbour, Peter Lee, with his family history. Peter has since passed away. Peter was the grandson of Ann and John /James Lee through their son Peter who married Florence Biglands.
I am not connected with the family in any way other than as a neighbour who was helping out.

:) Thanks for that Dee. You must have been a great neighbour to try and untangle that lot.
