Hi All,
I have, McAskill, in the family.
William, married Christina McLeod,
they were farmers in Assynt, in the mid, late, 1700s,
Their son, Murdo,[Murdoch], born abt 1770, died 1857
married Kate McKay, Murdo joined the Army.93rd reg. and Had James In Drogheda, Ireland 1820. Plus others.
Afterwards, they settled in Cromarty.
Kate McKay's parents were, James McKay, and Susannah Bird.
Are there any family around Assynt, left.
Love to hear from you.
Presumeably, thhis line came from Skye.

Hi again.
sorry for the long delay - my emails and phone havent stopped all morning! :)
i am actually having difficulty making out the parents names on the marriage cert. but Christy's parents look like Donald Macgregor crofter and Mary Macgregor m.s Maciver.
any thoughts on William's parents appreciated.
then i found the following on the igi, but no sign of Christy's (Christina's) birth.
DON MCGREGOR
Spouse: MARY MCIVER
Marriage: About 29 MAR 1836 Gairloch, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland
JOHN MC GRIGOR

Christening: 10 NOV 1837 Gairloch, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland

Hi Jo,
I think Thomas Macintosh is the registrar, as well as the witness for just about everything on that certificate, except in the column listing officiating minister and witnesses, where there is also what looks to be a "J Macintosh" as well!
Rent-a-witness perhaps?

Are you going to go for the 1871c for Kenneth, seeming he was alive in 1868?
and also the deaths.
Very exciting, very exciting ;D ;D

i think the date is 1868. on the twentieth day of february. ?? schoolhouse.
no idea what it says underneath william macaskill (& his mark) cattle dealer bachelor ?? ?? ?? witness. 29. his usual residence ?? melvaig.
underneath Christy Macgregor (& her mark) domestic servant - does it say the witness there is the "registrar" ??. 26. usual residence ??.
then 2nd column from right - (signed) william ross minister free-church of scotland,
(signed) ?? witness, thomas macintosh witness.
please help!!!! :'(
-
sorry! - didnt know there were more replies.....
-
OK, OK....let me have a reallllllly good look at it now and I'll get everything I can off the damn thing!
X-ray eyes, I don't know...probably just comes from years of trying to read my mum's and nanna's handwriting ::)

On second thoughts, the name of the schoolhouse doesn't begin with "M", so scratch that.
I'm sure someone has already worked that out, though!
-
out of interest.... i cant read it, but what about poolewe schoolhouse instead of morlewe? i only ask because other than i know it is in that area - christina says on the 1891 census she was born in poolewe and also says that her daughter margaret was born there too!
1881 census shows christina born gairloch and margaret born urquhart.
-
i will try and get a look at the 1841,51,&61 censuses this week and will let you know the results........
i hope they will have lots more info, because i cant find any of the births, etc on the igi....
-
Are you going to get kenneths death,,,,,Please. :-* :-*
-
i will look just now. :)
i wonder if this is the family in 1881....

i guess i'll need to look at the 1891 census too - looks as though they were in the same place.... lucky for me!
-
Well done, i know it ends up costing a heap.
but it is all worth it.
i tell you what, Because your eye is in... 8)
Can you search, for him and tell me which it is? and then I'll buy both John and his wife.
Lets hope, he died after 1855.
But I will do it later.
-
i need to go out just now. - but i will definitely be back later. hopefully with some more info for you. :)
-
I had alook myself, for a death of an* Maccaskill(soundex)
and Maclean, and there was one match but not her.....too young.
I had a look at John Macaskill(soundex), R&C.
and, there is a possible brother to Kenneth, John Macaskill 1864 aged 48yrs Mothers suranem Maclean. sth Gairloch.
also 1864 John McCaskill 33yrs Mother surname McIver.
carloway.
kenneths son?
-
here is the census info....
1851 - they are not at melvaig. - they could be at aultbea, but i didnt have time to look. (only had 1/2hr)
1861 - lot 7, melvaig, south gairloch, roc
kenneth mckaskell head mar 49 crofter roc gairloch
mary " wife mar 44 " wife roc "
william " son unm 20 fisher " "
margaret " dau " 16 servant " "
hannah " " " 14 scholar " "
1871 & 1881 posted earlier
1891 - croft no. 7, melvaig, south gairloch, roc
kenneth macaskill head mar 81 crofter (working on own account) roc gairloch G
Mary " wife mar 78 " wife roc gairloch G
Johan " dau unm 44 general domestic servant roc gairloch G
Mary mackenzie g.dau unm 12 scholar roc gairloch G
question for anybody willing?? are hannah (14 in 1861 & 20 in 1871) and Johan (30 in 1881 & 44 in 1891) the same person? - johannah maybe? or am i just completely stupid?? :-[
also kenneth's death is registered by his daughter who appears to be "Joan"??
also the macgregors were at: melangaum(sp?), inverasdale in 1861. (didnt have time to check the other censuses for them.
donald macgregor head 48 crofter & fisherman roc gairloch
mary " wife 55 " wife " "
john " son 24 fisherman " "
christian " dau 21 " dau " "
??ina " " 19 " " " "
harriot " " 17 crofter dau " "
duncan " son 14 scholar " "
murdo " " 12 " " "
daughter (above) name could have been alexanderina maybe? - it was difficult to read and very faded....
-
just shutting down computer when i thought of something - grand daughter mary mackenzie would have been born before 1881 census! so i got my discs out again:

then compared this with SP marriages (not viewed though)
SP have one match for gairloch in 1876 for duncan mackenzie and margaret maccaskill!
- i know it doesnt help with the parents, but it is another branch for my tree and thought i'd let you all know, because you have been great at helping me!! ;D
wish i'd thought of looking at the neighbours on the 1891 census while i was there... :'( never mind, its a good excuse to go back again one day next week hopefully.

I read the site you said,,Yes they are all your family ,,youlucky thing..
the site about the famous Kennethis
this

-
I was wondering, in the 1871c
Kenneth and family say they were born in.........
ROC aultbea .........
Is this part of Gairloch?
Just making sure this is the same family....
I have done myself up a tree of your family so I can keep track...
At a quick look it looks like Hannah and Johan are possibly the same person.
-
small update...
btw aultbea is in gairloch (as far as i know :-[ )
in a previous posting, i had said one of kenneth's daughters may have been alexanderina, but the census was very faded....
i havent confirmed this yet but it looks like she was and married another mackenzie (looking at the names of the children anyway.........)
will need to save up for SP again - lol

hi just wondering if anyone is researching these Mc Askill's thanks Michele
-
Hi Michelle
I don't live all that far from Inverkirkaig - say 10 miles - and I've definitely heard of the Inverkirkaig McAskills. In fact a female McAskill (now in her 80s) married into a local family. If you're interested I'll put out some feelers and get back to you via PM. It will be next week at the earliest mind :)

I have been reading all about your McAskills in Assynt and wonder if any way they could be connected to my Margaret MacAskill in Durness.
I have no information on her except she was married to a John Gunn
She is metnioned on her sons DC. He too was John Gunn and died age 87
(supposedly) in 1894, which would make his DOB 1807.
Working on the premise that Margaret was around 20 when he was born it would make her DOB about 1787
Any ideas anyone
