Hello,
I am searching for a family link for James Lowry Born 1856 Newtownards. He is a distant relative of mine. I have the following information:
James Lowery joined the british army in Belfast June 29th 1874, Newtownards. Served in South Africa, during the Zulu war. (I have his documents). He gave his next of kin during Enlistment as:
Father: Hugh
Mother: Ellen
Brothers: Hugh, John, Alexander
Unfortunately, James passed away at Netley Hospital in Hamshire England in 1894 at the age of 38 yrs old.
I have found the birth records for his brothers, but not for James. He should be listed in the Civil Records but I have not found it. I could use some help on this.
Thank you
S.Lowrey

Hi,
James was born before 1864 so there will be no Civil Registration record. You will have to depend on church records.

Thank you sir for your reply.
Any advice on how to proceed? He was a protestant I know that.
Thank again,

Hi,
You will have to find the church where he was baptised. This may help:- http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Newtownards_Urban/Mill_Street_Part_of_/1260551/
It is the 1901 census and it looks as though Hugh and Allen were living with their daughter. I also found that Susannah Lowery married Andrew Purdy on 13 May 1882 in Newtownards First Presbyterian Church. As it was usual to get married in the bride's church I would try that one.

Hello Kingskerswell,
Thank you for that information. I have seen that census information a few times before and did believe that it is the same Hugh & Elleanor that I have been looking for. The names of Susannah's children even resemble the names of her brothers to a "T". I had one doubt though. On June 27th 1874, Newtownards, James Lowery (son of Hugh & Ellen's) lists his next of kin on his military records (which I have). He lists
Father: Hugh
Mother: Ellen
Brothers: Alexander, John & Hugh
Susannah is not mentioned. According to the 1901 Irish Census, her age is listed as 29. She would have been born in 1872. According to the Irish Civil Registration Index, She married Andrew Purdy May 13th 1882 at the 1st Newtownards Presbyterian church. If she was at least 17 years old, then her birth date would be around 1865 and she should have been listed as a next of Kin on James Military record.
I thought maybe Susannah may have been the daughter of another Hugh Lowery from Newtownards that was the husband of Ellen Dumbar according to the Rosdavies site. I cannot seem to find any information about the other Hugh Lowery. What do you think?

Hello Kinskerwell,
You mentioned that I would have to find the church where James was baptised. I did find an LDS record of where his brother Alexander was baptist. It does not indictate the church, but do I need to hire a researcher to access the LDS records, or is this something I can do myself?
Thank you again.

Hi,
You should be able to order the LDS record at your nearest LDS centre for a very modest charge.

Susannah Purdy's age looks more like 39 than 29 on the census image (and son James was listed as 16 so 28 is unlikely).

In 1911 Susannah's age is 48-

Hello Kingskerwell & Aghadowey.
Thank you for your replies. There is a LDS center in my small little town, which I will plan a visit to shortly. I am looking forward to the visit.
I looked at the census image again and do agree that Susannah Purdys age does look like 39, which would make a whole bunch of sense.
Thank you for your help.
