Title: Nash - 1841 Help ?!?
Post by: Welsh Girl on Sunday 26 February 12 20:08 GMT (UK)
Hello :)  me again  ::)

Some time ago, I posted for some help on linking Florrie Davies (shown on 1901 and 1911 census with Thomas & Margaret (nee Nash) JENKINS & Family of Pentrebach.  First she is shown as a visitor, then a Niece)  I still haven't been able to find how she is linked, so thought I'd look at the NASH line - to see if there is a link there ....

I'm a little bit stuck trying to find the Mother - Mary Ann Nash (1813/16), and her Daughter (yep :-\) Mary Ann Nash (1837) on the 1841 census.  Mary had another Daughter in 1841 - called Sarah Nash, in Merthyr (although I can't find her Birth, only a Sarah in 1843 in Swansea) .....  I have, who I believe to be the Father, JOHN NASH on the 1841 census, with their Son (ARGH!! - John Nash) living in High Street, Merthyr,  They are lodging with Maryan & Maryan Watkins.  I first thought this was too much of a coincidence, but they are clearly shown as Watkins on the census originals .. shame !

The family are:  John (1816), Mary/Mary Ann (1813), Mary Ann (1837), John (1840), Sarah (1841), Elizabeth (1844) & Margaret (1850)

I have John (the Father) on the 1841, 1861-1891 (* not on the 1851) ...... I have Mary on the 1851-1881 census, but can;t find her or the first children on the 1841 .... grrr

HELP PLEASE ??

on closer examination (and unless I am losing the plot) NONE of the places of birth OR YEARS of birth for their children (according to the census) are correct .....

Possible births under Watkins in Merthyr for the children born pre 1849.

Possible explanation
- census entry you have is correct - parents not married in 1841
- John (1840) could be son of John but perhaps not by Mary Ann?
- children listed as Watkins may not be children of John Nash?

Cant see a John Nash birth in the right area in the right time frame - tho there are a few John  Watkins in Merthyr born c1840 on Freebmd

Would suggest contacting Merthyr registrars for birth certificates.
As you have an address in 1841 might want to start by looking for Sarah c1841 or John c1840 at this address with a mother of Mary Ann Watkins - though would not expect a father to be listed if registered by unmarried mother.

THANK YOU !!!

FAB!  UGH this family is definately, driving me INSANE !!

There is a birth for a John Nash in 1840 (on FreeBMD) for Monmouth.  According tot he 1851 census, Mary Ann was born in Monmouthshire.

I wonder who the Mother is then for John, Sarah & Elizabeth?

It looks from this then, that Margaret maybe the only child from the marriage ....

What a tangled web ..... ???

There are WATKINS births for all the children, matching the years on the census years .... the only one that stands out to me as different is John Nash (1839).  I wonder if John (Senior) had him with him a the Mother had died ??  He found him a new Mam, complete with siblings too ...

Sarah and elizabeth possibly children of maryann and take nash name in 1851 census as mum has now married john nash.

John nash 1839/1840 could be either son of john from an earlier relationship or son of maryann just enumerated as nash. as no relationshios shown in 1841 may need to find his birth certificate to try and sort this.

Thank you :D

I found another marriage for "A" John Nash - 17th April 1837 to a Mary Ellis in Merthyr Tydfil.  There was also a death for a Mary Nash in Merthyr for the December quarter 1837 ..... not too sure if this would be the same Mary/John relationship.  A bit early for the birth of John Nash Junior though (unless the age on the census years is out a bit - which is possible)

Mary Ann Watkins was very 'active' .... I wonder if the children were biologically John Nash's (as he was there in 1841)

I need some certificates I think .......

Still no closer to linking in Florrie Davies though ..... >:(   I think she maybe linked in from another line ... but I need to get my head around this Nash find first !!

Thanks everyone ....
