Thank you for all your very helpful suggestions yesterday .... I am now waiting on the RO to come back to me to confirm some details, and I will apply for the relevant certificates ....
However, I am still having problems find JOHN NASH on the 1851 census. I am guessing he's been badly mistranscribed ..... ggggrrrrr
According to earlier, and later census records, John was born circa 1816 in Neath.
He is in Cyfarthfa on the 1861 census, and I have him up until his death in 1891 (in Merthyr/Pentrebach) .. he just seems to have disappeared on the 1851 census ... ???
His original occupation was a Mason, so could very well have travelled ... but on later census was shown as a Rail Presser
Any help would be really really appreciated.

Have you got the order of occupations the wrong way round??
according to census his occupation was
1841 Rail maker
1861 Rail Presser
1871 Rail Man
1881 Mason
1891 retired mason

I cannot find him after trying many variations.
I think his wife and family are at home - so have looked for lodgers etc -no luck

oops ! He did both of those ..... :-[ Sorry Suz ....
I can't find military type records for him either .... He's left his new Wife and their family home, yes, on the 1851 they are in (what looks like) Bryants Field, Merthyr Tydfil - although his new Wife is shown as a Housekeeper (and Mary Ann, the Daughter) as a Housekeepers Daughter .. as opposed to a Masons Wife (for example) or just a Wife.
This is annoying .. how many variations are there for Nash ?? ??? I've tried a lot too .....
Where is he ???? :-\

I searched Rash, dash, naish, nich, neece, nack
I also searched on fore name and p.o.b. and y.o.b. -and then surnames
So annoying when they are hiding!!!!!

Thanks Suz .... I know his Daughter Margaret, is transcribed on one census, as RESH ... I found her by using her Christian name I think ..... she is with the same family on the 1861 and the 1871 census .... :o
John is on ALL the others .... I agree, VERY frustrating!! You watch, he'll be shown as John Thomas - becaue he's lodging with someone called "Thomas" ..... the only way we'll find that is be complete accident ...... >:(

I spend too much time researching Neish and nash is often what the writer chose to record. 45 spellings of Neish and counting.
