hi,
i would be extremley grateful if anyone could look up the following for me in the ORTON parish registers-
MAR. 1760 ALL SAINTS CHURCH, marriage between GEORGE WOOF AND KATHERINE WILKINSON
1750 birth of elizabeth woof ,parents WILLIAM WOOF and DEBORAH.
APR 1791 burial of GEORGE WOOF
Thanks in advance,i am very interested in the smaller details e.g. where they lived etc as there seemed to be a bit of movement in the WOOF FAMILY between ORTON and SELSIDE and LEVENS.
thanks

Hello
I have copies of the Orton parish register marriages for the period 1710-1746 so not the period you want.
However, the Diocese of Carlisle marriage licences do have the marriage you mention:
9 Mar 1760
George Woof of Birkbeck Fells parish of Orton, bachelor, yeoman, marks
Katharine Wilkinson of Eskew Head, parish of Orton
bondsman: Joshua Brunskell, parish of Orton, yeoman
marriage to take place at Orton
Similarly I don't have the christenings, burials for the period you want.
regards

Hi Deborah,
Would it be possible to look a marriage up for me in the Orton PR's?
I am looking for a William Hodgson Orton - maybe Scarside - marrying around 1728.
Are there any other marriages for any Hodgsons from Scarside Orton?
Thanks in anticipation.

I am very sorry but I have a gap in the coverage for marriages between 1725 and 1735 inclusive.
There is this:
29 Mar 1744 William Hodgson of Scarside and Anne Noble of Borrowbridge both of this parish.
Christenings:
9 Mar 1741/2 Isabel the daughter of Thomas Hodgson of Scarside
Burials
18 Mar 1742/3 Thomas Hodgson of Scarside aged 21 small pox
Hope it helps
regards

Thank you Gillian.
Have you by any chance got the baptism of a James around 1685 in Orton and who his parents were and if possible a marriage for them.
Also anything about a marriage of a Thomas Hodgson to a Cecilly Whitehead 1681
I was given quite a few births and marriages from some one but can not find any reference to them on any of the usual sites. I am beginning to think they were non-conformists.
Many thanks

I assume you mean me - not Gillian?!
I only have copies of Orton parish records for two brief(ish) periods and not back to the 17th century so I can't help you, I'm afraid. It used to be the case that the Orton parish records before 1746 were not available online. I wanted to track some Crosby Ravensworth people to Orton so I requested the registers for the periods in which I was interested. I would love to have the entire register but I don't.
I have a vague feeling that I've answered a query about Hodgsons in Orton before?

Hi Deborah
First an apology for addressing you by the wrong name. :-[
It is a shame that the Orton records aren't on-line.
You are right about looking for the Hodgsons - I have done a search and this is the posting
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,232782.0/wap2.html
I have also found some notes in a box that I printed from this site. So another apology. :-[ :-[
I have moved it on since then by getting a Will which has proved that my Dorothy Hodgson born c1749, wife of Anthony Nicholson was the daughter of William Hodgson of Scarside who died 1793. The will does not mention a wife so presume she has died.
You gave me this marriage for a William
29 Mar 1744 William Hodgson of Scarside and Anne Noble of Borrowbridge both of this parish.
Which I believe may be more likely than the one I was given by someone else (as it actually says William of Scarside) i.e. William Hodgson married Margaret Burton 20 Feb 1749 Ravenstonedale.
But he could have married twice.
However I was wondering if anyone had anything else to add since the last time as it was started a few years ago now and if anyone had any more records on Orton.
Many Thanks :)

No worries!
You could always ask Kendal to do a quick look up for you? You know the rough date and there are only a few marriages a year in Orton anyway.
Good luck

Hi Deborah,
Pleased to get a reply as this was first posted some years ago. Happy Christmas to you too.
Thank you very much for those. I am sure the Nobles af Borrowbridge are all of the same family but can not yet connect them.
I can not find the baptism of Ann Noble but I am thinking they were maybe non-conformists.
I see there were a lot of Nobles from Shap too so wonder if they could have been the same family.
Will go on to the wills next.
Thanks

Hi Deborah
Is it possible to look up whether there are records for a baptism for a James Stubbs in Orton in October 1720. His father should be Thomas. Is a mother recorded? Also baptismal records for Christopher Stubbs in 1723, Margaret in 1725, Thomas in 1728 ans John in 1731.
Many thanks
-
Hi
There is a baptism of James son of Thomas Stubs of Rayne in October 1720 [day of month obscured] - no mother given.
Christopher the son of Thomas Stubs of Raine 10 January 1722/3. No mother given.
I don't have records for 1724-1728.
regards

Thank you so much for this information Deborah. I thought that I may have missed you as previous posts were many years ago which I didn't realise when I made the post . Its a shame Orton records pre 1745 are not available on line as there seems to have been several of us looking for the same information.
Thank you again for your time.
